Reserving seats on shinkansen

Hello,
I'll be flying into tokyo on the 27th March and I'll take the shinkansen to kyoto. I heard that during my trip (27th march - 6th april) it'll be very crowded in japan. Is it better for me to reserve seats on the shinkansen to kyoto and when I return to tokyo (1st april) as well?
We're a family of 4.

It is always recommended to reserve seats. It is free if using a JR Pass. If not, you would have to queue. If your station, is the first station of the shinkansen then you would probably have seats so there would not be a need to reserve them.
