Narita airport to Nikko

Hi
We arrive at Narita airport at 20:00. On the next day we would like to go to Nikko and stay there for a night. We are not sure where it is best to stay on the night of our arrival - close to Narita airport or somewhere in Tokyo, or maybe somewhere else?
We are very confused. Please help!!!
