Cycling from Hakone to Odowara 2015/4/9 02:52
Can anyone give me feedback or details on cycling the route from Hakone to Odowara? I believe this is Route 1? I'm looking for road conditions, size of road shoulder, etc.

I will be visiting with my road bike and I'm an experienced cyclist.

I plan on taking the train up to Hakone and thought it would be fun to ride down. I'm not enough of a hill-junkie to do the ride up :)

Thanks!

Hakone covers a large area with many different roads. Indeed, for at least the last stretch towards Odawara, you would be using Route 1 (although you could also try to look for alternative, minor roads). Note also that there are multiple Route 1s. Within Hakone, there are many roads. Some are busier than others. It depends from where you intend to ride. The train goes as far as Gora. I imagine the old Route 1 from Lake Ashinoko via Hatajuku to Hakone-Yumoto to be quite pleasant for cycling on weekdays. But the newer Route 1 via Miyanoshita tends to be too busy, especially on weekends when it must be a horror to cycle there. And it is quite narrow in many sections. Also, I don't imagine the Yumoto-Odawara section to be too attractive for cycling. It is urban and busy.

I generally don't recommend to cycle on weekends. But weekdays are generally much clamer, and cycling on the less busy roads may be not too bad.

Google Streetview lets you take a look at all the roads in Hakone:

Uji - thank you for the response. I would be coming from the Gora or Chokokunomori train stations as I want to visit the open air museum. I would ride from there directly to Hakone-Yumoto and on to Odawara.

Going Lake Ashinoko - Hatajuku - Hakone-Yumoto would be a longer trip than I'd want to do that day.

I found a video on Youtube of the drive from Hakone-Yumoto up towards Gora and the road looks OK, but not much shoulder. Lots of traffic.

I'll look at the google street-view link you posted.

Re: Cycling from Hakone to Odowara 2015/4/9 17:34
Street view(google map) recorded most major car roads in Hakone. Why not open?

This is car drivers record on R1 from Tokyo Nihonbashi(origin) to Osaka over 530km.
https://youtu.be/xMtN3y17p6E (x8 speed play/no driver voice)
19:48 Odawara city in
24:00 Hakone town in (means Hakone pass starts soon heavy climbing sections)
24:30 HakoneYumoto stn (watched "EVA" series?)
http://otakumode.com/sp/visit_japan/seichi-junrei/s011
26:13 crossing near Owakudani stn
So Hakone to Odawara is down slope no problem except over speed.

And carrying by train/bus need covered(packed) usual (as rule/not law) like this.

Also no need carry fee and no cycle rack usual. (Don't put on wheel chair space pls!)
