I plan to travel from Tokyo to Lake Kawaguchi to Kyoto and return to Tokyo. Any suggestions on easiest and most economical way of doing this?

Well you're in luck, because in this case the easiest route is also one of the most economical. I would recommend: Tokyo to Kawaguchiko by bus Kawaguchiko to Mishima Station by bus Mishima to Kyoto by shinkansen Kyoto back to Tokyo by shinkansen You can find more specific details on this page: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6905.html
