All the rail lines to Hitoyoshi are JR, so you can get tickets at the Midori-no-madoguchi anywhere in Japan. The "Aso Boy" from Kumamoto to Miyaji via Aso is also JR. The Minamiaso line or Takamori Line, is private and runs on the south side of the central peaks from Tateno to Takamori. Connections leave from Kumamoto Station Platform 0 and go to Takamori-mura at the east end of the caldera via Tateno (transfer). They have a "beer train" twice in July if you read about that, but it leaves and returns to Takamori. You ride the slow train and drink Kirin that's included with your ticket. http://www.mt-torokko.com/info/data/34.pdfThe "SL Hitoyoshi" is a steam locomotive (that used to run where the Aso Boy now runs) that leaves from Kumamoto Station and goes to Hitoyoshi following the Kuma River. The days and prices it runs are at http://www.jrkyushu.co.jp/trains/slhitoyoshi/On the calendar at the bottom the days with gold dots are the days it runs. It makes one run to Hitoyoshi and one a day back. As it's JR, you can reserve at a JR station ticket window. You might not get the day you want as it's popular. I'm not familiar with the "A Train Boy Hitoyoshi."

Some of the smaller private lines have summer specials on their train lines such as the Aso beer trains. The Sanriku Line that runs along the east coast of Iwate used to rent out the train in off hours for catered parties. That stopped in 2011 when the tracks were damaged by the tsunami, but they're ramping up again and have had a Waseda University jazz band play on one run. http://www.sanrikutetsudou.com/?p=2777I think you'd have to go to each private line's web page or Facebook page to see what's being offered. Wikipedia lists all the railway companies in Japan with links.
