Kanto, Takayama/Hokuriku and Kansai pass 2015/7/7 14:33
Hi,

Appreciate any advice.

I am currently planning a trip with the following itinerary.
Day 1 (Nov 14, Sat): Fly in to Tokyo (Narita)
Day 2 (Nov 15, Sun): Tokyo
Day 3 (Nov 16, Mon): Tokyo
Day 4 (Nov 17, Tue): Tokyo
Day 5 (Nov 18, Wed): Tokyo
Day 6 (Nov 19, Thu): Takayama (via Nagoya)
Day 7 (Nov 20, Fri): Takayama
Day 8 (Nov 21, Sat): Shirakawa-go
Day 9 (Nov 22, Sun): Kyoto (via Kanazawa)
Day 10 (Nov 23, Mon): Kyoto
Day 11 (Nov 24, Tue): Kyoto
Day 12 (Nov 25, Wed): Kyoto
Day 13 (Nov 26, Thu): Kyoto (day trip to Nara)
Day 14 (Nov 27, Fri): Kyoto (day trip to Osaka and Himeji)
Day 15 (Nov 28, Sat): Fly out from Osaka (Itami)

Questions:
1. Is it worth getting a Kanton Area Pass while in Tokyo?
2. Is it worth getting a Takayama Hokuriku Pass and use it from Day 6 to 9 (I calculated cost to be 17,250 yen)?
Will be getting a standard ticket from Tokyo to Nagoya.
3. Is it worth getting a Kansai Wide Area Pass to cover Day 13 and 14 or to stick wih Kansai Thru Pass (slower trains to Himeji? planning on staying close to Kyoto station)?

Thanks.

1. Is it worth getting a Kanton Area Pass while in Tokyo?

It depends on how far you travel within three days. If you take a long-distance trains especially Shinkansen, your Kanto Area Pass will pay off in one day.

Tokyo to Karuizawa, 6110 yen/one way.
Other sectors: Narita Airport to Tokyo 3220 yen/one way.
Tokyo to Nikko 5780 yen/one way.
Tokyo to Kawaguchiko 4280 yen/one way.
Tokyo to IzukyuShimoda 6460 yen/one way.

I would do two or three day trips, but it depends on your preference.

2. Is it worth getting a Takayama Hokuriku Pass and use it from Day 6 to 9 (I calculated cost to be 17,250 yen)?

Yes, I think your calculation to be correct so it will pay off.

3. Is it worth getting a Kansai Wide Area Pass to cover Day 13 and 14 or to stick wih Kansai Thru Pass (slower trains to Himeji? planning on staying close to Kyoto station)?

I think you mean Kansai Area Pass.

Kyoto to Himeji via JR Rapid train (not Shinkansen)
http://goo.gl/yRxdsp
96 min 2270 yen/one way

Kyoto to Sanyo-Himeji via non-JR trains
http://goo.gl/CqrLlg
157 min 1970 yen/one way

Kansai Area Pass (JR) 1 day 2200 yen. I recommend this pass.

Kyoto to Nara

Kyoto to KintetsuNara (Kintetsu) 47 min 620 yen/one way

You should buy normal tickets or use IC cards such as Suica/Pasmo/Icoca/Pitapa.
