Train luggage space

Hi, Travelling mostly by shinkansen in recent Japan trips where medium sized lugguage have been no problem (in rare cases I had it put in the leg space in front of me), I keep wondering how the lugguage "space" would be in limited express trains and local trains.
I do not count local trains in big metropols like Tokyo, Osaka, etc where rush hour would be a problem anyway (have seen lot of passengers on Yamanote around the clock even out of rush hour).
I might need to bring my suitcase onboard that's why I am asking.

The luggage situation on limited express trains is quite similar to shinkansen trains. As for local trains, the option of putting a suitcase behind the last row of seats is usually not an option. But local traisn also have overhead luggage racks for small and mid sized pieces of luggage.

Local trains (you might term country side connections) often have quite a lot of floor space (like the commuter trains in the big cities.
Other longer distance trains there is a mix. Travelling on the Sonic in Kyushu there were areas where several people could store bags. Recently we traveled on the Inaho Limited Express and the rack space was similar to the shinkansen, but our larger cases were able to sit at the end of the carriage as it wasn't too full.

I remember seeing a couple of american tourists on the JR Nikko train, where the seatings are aligned sideways. They did indeed use the space for their rather huge lugguage (probably a feet bigger than mine), but it worked out as the car was empty. Could not help notice the looks from some locals though, no offence.
I measured the smaller suitcase again, 60-63 cm height, 41 wide, 21-24 (at the wheel part) across.
Do you think that would fit in front of me if sitting in a limited express train?
Not sure about those JR Rapid trains normally used between Osaka - Kyoto, Osaka - Nara though, referring to the seats in front direction.
Would it fit into a normal sized coin locker by the way? Or should I need a big one?

Would it fit into a normal sized coin locker by the way? Or should I need a big one?According to JR-East, https://www.jreast.co.jp/estation/stations/img/pdf/info_coinlocker.pdfYour suitcase will not fit into 標準 (regular) or 中(medium) size coin locker. It will fit in 大 (large) and 特大(extra large) size lockers though. Basically, Japanese people do not travel with suitcase. We (I am a Japanese) travel with travel bags or backpacks basically. If we must take the suitcase, we will bring and keep it in the hotel or send it via Takkyubin. Large and extra large size lockers are not so many, but you may be able to find them in major stations. As far as I know, Tokyo, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka have luggage storage room,

Hi, My wife and i did quite a lot of travelling with suitcases in Japan on all kind of trains and almost never had any trouble with the luggage. In the shinkansen we could most of the time store the suitcasa behind the last seats. So do not worry too much about your luggage.
BTW I have no experience with it but it seems quite popular in Japan to ship ahead your luggage to your next destination.
Have a nice trip.
