one day in Fukuoka 2015/8/4 20:33
hi,
I have 4 days in Fukuoka Prefecture and one day is still a question mark, I have a JR pass so transportation is not a problem
I cant decide between miyazaki, kagoshima and kumamoto
they all look like good cities to visit.
any experience or advice ??

What are you doing on your other three days?
I spent one and half days in Fukuoka, and on the full day I went to Yufuin, which is a very pretty onsen town and a lovely day trip. Closer to Fukuoka you could travel to Nanzoin to see the giant bronze buddha - largest bronze statue in the world but almost no one knows it's there! The temple it is located at is also really nice. A trip there would only take a couple of hours; Nanzoin is about 20 minutes from Fukuoka by train if I remember correctly.

Hi Sigal,
Been to all three and I love Kagoshima. Hot, orange trees, Sakurajima. Not far from Ibusuki, furthest tip of Japan. I went there for the real sand bath. HOT!

Guys take in my mind what was said. Only one day free. Doing kirishima and ibusuki is already time consuming enough. How to put Kagoshima and sakurajina in there too.

Kumamoto and Miyazaki are both possible. Though Miyazaki will be only possible if you take the first train out.

Kumamoto city is possible in a day but to include the highlands of aso nearby is not possible.

Kurokawa, yufuin, and beppu are onsen towns. Lovely places. All nearby Kagoshima. And worth a full day. Kurokawa is nice to go to if you take the mt aso route. Yufuin is a nice place to walk about. Beppu has both sight seeing and a great sunrise view.

I personally liked Nagasaki. I visited Gunkanjima (yes, the one shown in 'Skyfall') via a tour group. The tour starts at 9.30 am. I ventured out from Hakata at 7 in the morning and got there at 9 am. The tour ends around 1 pm, and you still have half a day to visit around Nagasaki town.

Hi guys, thank you so much for the comments
First of all, onsen twon are not on the table, but thanks.
I will sleep 4 nights in Nagasaki after hakata so Gunkanjima will happen anyway.
I'll stay one day and a half in Fukuok and the rest I'll travel near by...
The bronze Buddha sounds brilliant, I shall visit nanzoin.
Thanks again

There are many good places to see - it's your pick. Nagasaki would be the obvious choice, but if that is already on the schedule afterwards, that is fine.
The Nanzoin Temple is a hidden jewel that few ever discover. Really too bad. And as said, just 20 minutes by train from Hakata Stn.

There are many other good places in the city to see as well.

Rakusuien and Yusentei are two very nice traditional gardens that you'd never believe are in the middle of a city.

If you have the JR Pass though, why not squeeze more value out of it. If you start early in the morning, you could go to Kumamoto and see the castle, plus another place you should not miss is the Suizenji Garden.

From there continue on to Kagoshima, and see Sakurajima, Senganen, and Shiroyama Park.

Going to Miyazaki is probably too time consuming for what is there, and other places are more interesting.
One idea very few people hit upon is actually going the other way - take a trip to Shimonoseki for a day - it has some very good sights, and it is often overlooked, so there are extremely few tourists. Hinoyama is a great place to go up and get a wonderful view over the straight and bridge, and if you want something you'll never forget, go up further to see the Akiyoshido Limestone Cave. Absolutely stunning.

Plus one other place nobody thinks about, is if you are willing to open your wallet a bit you can easily fly down from Fukuoka to Okinawa very cheaply on a low cost carrier such as Jet Star. If you're not going to be in Japan again for a long time, or ever, it is something to consider.
