Tsukiji Fish Market 2011/5/13 06:55
Does it still make sense to go to the fish market even thought the action area is closed for tourists?

It depends on the person. A lot of people will enjoy seeing the outer market and having a meal there. Or the wholesale part of the inner market after 9am:

Yes 2011/5/13 12:57
Yes, it is still worth a visit. I have taken a few people there who did not want to get up at 3:30am to see the Tuna Auctions, and they still thoroughly enjoyed their visit.

If you don't mind getting up early I would recommend getting there at 7:00am or 7:30am and queue up for sushi at one of the popular sushi bars, usually it will be an hour wait at the popular ones. Eat your sushi, then go for a wander through the main market section.

The market area has a huge range of sea creatures and is still very interesting. Just remember to wear shoes that you don't mind getting wet!

Enjoy your trip!

Thank you Uji!

Since the auction is closed, does it make sense to arrive by 9 am versus 5 am to see the outer market and the areas that are open at 9 am or there are some areas that are open before 9 am?

The wholesale area of the market should not be entered by tourists before 9am to avoid interference with business. So, if you want to see that part of the market, you should not come before 9am. The outer market, meanwhile, as interesting at 9am as at 5am. So, yes, it makes sense to arrive by 9am versus 5am.

Just go 2011/5/13 18:52
Tsukiji market is truly wonderful. We have yet to arrive before about 9.30 am on 3 occasions and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the whole experience. The inner market both seafood and then everything else is just amazing and the sushi restaurants are all great. We have our favorite. And we found it by going to it as it did NOT have a queue at the time. It did by the time we left about 30 mins later. Just go and enjoy.

what's the difference 2011/5/24 18:30
For some one who has not been to Tsukiji, but wants to go. What is the difference between the inner and outer markets please? Thank you. Aussie Dave.

The inner market is the wholesale area. Here's where you'll see the large tuna and other fish as they are being processed to sell to restaurants and other markets. Tsukiji's inner market can't be beat for the variety and volume of fish that you can see. There are also restaurants here that serve fresh sushi breakfasts. There are restaurants around the outer market too but the famous ones are in the inner market.

The outer market is a retail market packed with smaller vendors selling all kinds of kitchen related goods out of cramped booths and storefronts. Its also a exciting experience especially if you are into food. Also, I think you're probably more likely to find something to buy here as the portions are smaller and there is a large variety of retail goods for sale. This part of Tsukiji reminds me of other markets around Japan such as Nishiki Market in Kyoto and Omicho Market in Kanazawa.
