Dear All,
I wish to visit Iwo Jima some time in the future, however do realise that this is not going to be easy. Can somebody inform me about more about the options to get there from mainland Japan. Any information at all would be most welcome.

The island is closed to regular visitors, however you can still go there by joining a licensed tour. The following site may be the only company currently allowed to run tours to Iwo Jima, which are held once a year (usually in the spring I think). Also, I'm not sure how they handle transportation, but you may need to travel via the Ogasawara Islands, which are only reachable via a 26 hour ferry trip south of Tokyo. http://www.miltours.com/

There are multiple Iwo Jima (usually known in Japanese as Iojima or Ioto) in Japan. I assume you refer to the one where the fierce fighting took place during the last war. According to Wikitravel, the following comany is the only one that conducts tours there: http://www.miltours.com/It is a very remote, uninhabited island far in the south of Tokyo and part of the Ogasawara Island Group.

Thanks yllwsmrf and uji. Your responses confirm my fear that indeed it will not be easy to visit this historic island. I will visit the site you both indicated and check out what my options are.
