Visiting Hokkaido in late October 2011/7/12 00:46
I am planning a 7D5N trip with hubby to Hokkaido in late Oct.

1) How is the radiation comtamination in Hokkaido?
2) Is the food safe for consumption?
3) Is it better to drive and explore or more convenient to take train?
4) Is it wise to change hotel daily when travelling?
5) What are the highly recommended places to visit, experience?
6) Any old temple worth visiting?

Thank you!

1) How is the radiation comtamination in Hokkaido?

None. The Fukushima accident has no impact on Hokkaido.

Is the food safe for consumption?

Yes.

Is it better to drive and explore or more convenient to take train?

As a rule of thumb: public transportation is good for cities and between cities but bad in the countryside and in national parks.

Is it wise to change hotel daily when travelling?

Can be. Depends on your personal preferences. Especially if you like a fast pace of travel and don't stay more than a day in each location, staying in different hotels can be a good idea. Luggage can pose a complication if you change hotels constantly. However, if you travel by car, the luggage does not pose a problem.

What are the highly recommended places to visit, experience?

The ones with 2 or 3 stars:

6) Any old temple worth visiting?

No, Hokkaido has no good temples. The island was not colonized by the Japanese until a little bit more than 100 years ago. As a result, there are no historic temples.

Fairly safe in Hokkaido 2011/7/13 10:30
Hi!

This site compares recent radiation measurements
in Hokkaido and those in major Asian cities:
http://202.177.35.2/monitor/en/

The radiation levels in Hokkaido look obviously lower
than those in other Asian cities.

Foods are safe.

It's nice for us Hokkaido residents to see now many overseas tourists
back again. Thank you !

You will be able to enjoy autumn colors in late October. On high mountains, there will be snow.

Hokkaido Jingu 2011/7/13 22:17
Hokkaido Jingu at Sapporo in my opinion is worth a visit though. You can reach this place just using the subway.

Onuma Park 2011/7/14 02:33
For seasonal highlight, mid to late Oct is said to be a good time for autumn foliage in Onuma Park which is easily accessible from Hakodate.

In Hokkaido on vacation currently... 2011/7/17 06:59
the only effect of the earthquake I have experienced is the slight rationing of air conditioning which would not be a problem in late October.

There is no effect on the food here. It is crazy good. In my opinion the seafood is way better than Tokyo.
