one day tour in takayama/shirakawago

hi.our japan holiday from 17 dec - 27 dec

17-22 dec tokyo area
23-24 dec nagoya-takayama-shirakawago
24-27 dec kyoto-osaka
If we take JR tokaido from tokyo at 06.28 to nagoya, then change JR hida to takayama, and take a bus to shirakawago in one day. where should I stay, nagoya or takayama?
If we want to stay in nagayo because take a big suitcase, is enough time /train back to nagoya from takayama?

There are large coin lockers at Nagoya station, so just take an overnight bag north and stay in Takayama or Shirakawago.
