Tokyo to Osaka 2011/10/27 20:23
We are travelling with 2 kids (8 & 11 yrs).
Anyone can advise us the best and economical way to go to Osaka? Is it by domestic flight via Haneda or by Shinkansen (JR pass)?
Can we use JR pass on city train in Tokyo and Osaka?

Many thannks

Can you post the rest of your itinerary?
How long you plan to stay in Japan?
Do you fly in and out of Tokyo?

As a rule of thumb if you do a return trip from Tokyo to Osaka and back to Tokyo within 7 days then a 7-day JR Pass will pay off. (obviously the same applies to Osaka - Tokyo - Osaka)

Yes, you can use the JR Pass around Tokyo on the JR lines, the Yamanote especially connects a lot of the main tourist attractions. Just bear in mind that the JR Pass is not good value for travelling around one city, so sometimes you are better off getting a shorter JR Pass and combining it with normal tickets.

Around Osaka there are a number of JR lines but often the non-JR Subway lines are more convenient, but it depends where you plan on going.

For travelling from Osaka to surrounding areas for day trips the JR Pass can be used. For example to Hiroshima, Kyoto, Nara, Hikone, or Himeji.

Enjoy your trip!

Most of this is covered on the Japan-guide JR Rail Pass page here:-

I suggest you read the whole page as it is very useful.

And this Japan-guide page details other options for getting to and from Osaka:-

Re: Tokyo to Osaka 2011/10/28 10:06
Thanks.
My iteniery:
Day 1 - Arrive in Narita 9 am then straight to Osaka.
Day 2&3 - Osaka city tour (Universal studio - Aquarium, may consider Kobe any other suggestion?)
Day 4 - Back to Tokyo
Day 5 to day 12 - Tokyo area (Disneyland, Disneysea, Puroland).

Trios in 20 Dec.

I would recommend a 7-day JR Pass, activate it when you arrive at Narita.

To be honest I'd consider a bit more time in the Kansai area. I'd certainly add one day in Kyoto (at least) and consider a day trip to Nara to see the Daibutsu and the deer, and possibly a half-day trip to Hikone if you think seeing a Japanese castle would be interesting.

You can stay in Osaka and day trip to all of the above, or you can stay in Kyoto and day trip to all of the above, or a mix of the two.

Nara

Hikone

You could even consider Hiroshima if you think a visit to the Peace Park/A-dome/Museum would be appropriate.

I'm a little biased as I like cars, but a visit to the Mazda Museum and Factory tour in Hiroshima may be interesting/educational for kids too.

All of the above cities can be travelled to free of charge with the JR Pass.

For your remaining time in Tokyo after the JR Pass expires, I'd probably purchase a SUICA card which will make using the Tokyo trains more convenient.

Hope this helps!
