Hi, I have booked a ryokan in kurokawa onsen in Dec 2011. I will be coming from Kumamoto to Mt Aso by JR trian and plan to stopover Mt Aso before arriving in kurokawa onsen. Does the bus from aso station to kurakawa onsen need to be reserved? I do not drive. Thanks.

Reservations for the Kyusanko Kyushu Odan Bus are possible but not mandatory. However, if the bus is full and you don't have a reservation, you won't be able to board. This is the phone number for reservations; 096-354-4845 Reservations seem to be mandatory for the JR Aso Yufu Kogen Bus. Here are more basics about how to travel between Aso and Kurokawa: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4575.html?aFROM=4550_4575

There are local buses, but I believe they require two transfers along the way and are infrequent. Taxi is another option, but will be very expensive. But I believe that the risk of the bus being booked out is very low, especially for travel on regular weekdays and for travel before December 29.
