I need to plan an itinary to Osaka and Tokyo

I will be going to Osaka in February 2012 for 10 days ... From there I was thinking of going to Tokyo and also visiting some other towns on the way ... Would using the JR 7 days pass be sufficient if I were to activate it 3 days after I arrive ? Would staying in the Shinjuku area be convenient to travel around ? I have never been to Japan .... That's why I have to do some research to make this trip more worthwhile .... Thanks!

I suggest you read up about the options on this site: it has excellent information.
In general, if you are travelling from Osaka to Tokyo RETURN then a 7 day JR Pass will pay off.
