JR Green Pass 2011/12/15 09:29
We have decided on the JR Green Car Pass for our revised trip in April (logic: more room, less crowded=easier for recently #d leg)
I understand the need to reserve all seats for long trips on Shinkansens and Limited Express trains, but have a few queries:
1. if we decided to use a Ltd Exp from Kyoto to Osaka on the spur of the moment could we just get into a Green car, no reservations?
2. Are reservations required in Green Cars for the smaller lines/trains e.g. Yososuka line from Shinagawa to Kamakura?
3. JR Rapid Mie from Nagoya to IseShi shows reserved seats on Hyperdia, but not specifically Green car: what are these reserved seats like? Are they a specific car?
Many thanks!!!

No, that is against the rules of the pass that state you must make the seat reservations before boarding the train.

Are reservations required in Green Cars for the smaller lines/trains e.g. Yososuka line from Shinagawa to Kamakura?

No, they are not even possible. Green cars on urban trains in Tokyo are all non-reserved.

JR Rapid Mie from Nagoya to IseShi shows reserved seats on Hyperdia, but not specifically Green car: what are these reserved seats like? Are they a specific car?

They are ordinary, reserved seats (not green car). One out of the train's four cars is reserved. The others are unreserved.

In the past (until very recently), the Mie often had only two cars, and only half of one of the two cars used to be reserved.

You also need to pay an extra ~500yen w/ JRPass from Nagoya to Ise shi as it shares the track with a private line.

This is against the official rule but I've done it many times. When the conductor comes to check your ticket, tell him that you din't have time to make a reservation. He'll just let you stay in the Green car 99% of the time, provided there are unoccupied seats. But if you want a guaranteed seats in the Green car, go to the station a few minutes early and make a reservation.

Yes, 490 yen to be exact. You pay it on board to the conductor:
