JR Pass or local travel card? 2012/1/23 14:47

Hi..I will be spending time in Tokyo mainly, with one side trip to Hakone. I will be in Tokyo for 7 days in total. Is it better to get the local travel card or the JR Pass?

If its the local travel card, which one is recommended, as I will likely be switching to different lines around the city.

Thanks

Do not get a JR Pass (JPY28,300) for the time you'd be in Tokyo. Pay as you go with a SUICA card...http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2359_002.html

As far as your trip to Hakone, some of it wouldn't be on JR lines, so even that wouldn't be worth it.

The JR Pass only pays off if you go a long distance on a round trip, minimum distance is Kyoto or Osaka and back.

It depends which airport you arrive at and where you are staying in Tokyo, but usually the NEX + Suica (return) package is good value:-

For Hakone usually the Hakone Free Pass is good value:-

For getting around Tokyo just use the Suica and recharge it as required.

As mentioned, do NOT buy the JR pass.

Enjoy your trip!
