Stay for Authentic Japanese Experience

Planing a 7 day trip to Japan in early April. Would like to spend half of that time in Tokyo and the other half in a smaller authentic Japanese village to get a real feel for the customs outside of the city.
Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Brad

Anywhere in Japan is authentic. How far are you willing to travel? What do you want to do there? Do you consider tourist destinations unauthentic? I personally think there is nothing more "authentic" than to spend a night at a traditional ryokan with hot springs. Among my favorites for that is Tsurunoyu in Nyuto Onsen: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3650.htmlIt is a hot spring resort rather than a town, though.
