Hakone 3 day pass

Is the Hakone 3 day pass valid for 3 consecutive calendar days or 3 consecutive 24 h periods? For example, if I were to purchase a pass at 9:00 on Wednesday, would it be valid until 24:00 on Friday or 9:00 on Saturday? Would the return travel have to started or completed by 9:00 on Friday?

Most passes in Japan just work on calendar days, they don't care what exact time you purchased the pass.
So if you purchase at 9am on Wednesday it is valid until 11:59pm on Friday.
If you purchase at 7pm on Wednesday it is also valid until 11:59pm on Friday.
(There are some exceptions of course, and often as long as you join your transport before midnight you are ok to hop off after midnight, but the above is the general rule)
