rail pass for tokyo and kyoto? 2012/3/29 19:22
Hi. I had initially decided not to get a Japan Rail pass because I will mainly be in Tokyo and Kyoto, but I'm reading conflicting information. Should I get a pass if I will travel between Narita and Tokyo, then from Tokyo to Kyoto and back? Thanks! Other than that I will be traveling around Tokyo.

I will arrive on April 7th, go to Kyoto from the 11th to the 13th, then back to Tokyo for a few days.

7 day JR Pass price is roughly equal to a round shinkansen trip between Tokyo and Kyoto. So if you ride JR trains from/to the airport with the validity dates of the pass, JR Pass is cheaper than buying normal tickets.

NEX & SUICA to/from the airport and highway bus between Tokyo and Kyoto is even cheaper, but takes much more hours.

The Japan Rail Pass:

The JR East Pass does not cover Kyoto.
