Not sure if you have seen it but this page is very useful:-

Tokyo-kawaguchiko-Takayama-Shirakawago-Tokyo

The JR East pass only covers part of the way to Kawaguchiko (to Otsuki)

For Takayama it only covers you to Matsumoto, from there you can take a discounted bus to Takayama (note where you will need to purchase it)

From Takayama to Shirakawago the bus is not covered. (Choose to/from Takayama)

Note that for the JR East Pass Special you can just purchase it in Japan at Narita/Haneda. You can also purchase it online.

The same applies for the normal JR East Pass.

Depending on what else you wish to see the JR East Pass Special may suit you, it is only available for a limited time but may provide good value.

Enjoy your trip!

Re: JR East Pass 2012/4/1 22:27
Unless you are going to travel everyday, I'd recommend the JR East pass flexible 4-day, since you're only staying 7 days. I was in Japan 2 weeks ago for 7 days and sadly, I didn't even use up the 4 days (only 3).

The flexible 4-day allows you to choose any 4 days you want to use your pass - just decide when you want to use the shinkansens or what not. I typically use one day on my day of arrival because I have to use shinkansens to get to my destination and I use another day for getting back to Narita airport. The remaining two days, I take a day trip to Tokyo for shopping.

Anyway, the flexi pass is also readily available in Japan or you can buy it online as well.
The JR 7-day pass is not to be purchased in Japan, though.
