Nagoya Basho 2006 - Senshuraku

Well, yet another tournament is history and although we missed the 7 point mark for an overall scoring average it was the highest scoring tournament in Sumo Game history with a 6.96 average. Asashimaru, Norizo and Tsuyoikaze all had 119 points for the tournament to break the previous record of 117.

As for the yusho's, in Makunouchi, it was EM14 Norizo defeating the Yokozuna Doitsuyama in a winner-take-all match on the final day. Norizo (13-2) wins his first title and will likely pick up a few special prizes as a bonus.

The Juryo winner had already been decided on day 14 as WJ7 Tsurugame had a two match lead going into senshuraku. He finished the tournament with a nice 12-3 mark.

In Makushita, it came down to a two way play-off between Em3 Tsuyoikaze and Em46 Kaiowashiyama as the both were victorious in title elimination matches, however, Tsuyoikaze wins on total points 119-112.

Nagoya Basho 2006 - Day 14

With the final day of the Nagoya Basho ahead, the yusho for the 'big boys' has already been decided with Asashoryu picking up his 17th yusho. Hakuho, however, could make a serious bid for Yokozuna if he should upend Asashoryu on senshuraku. A victory today would give Hakuho a 13-2 record which on any given tournament be enough for a title. This would be two back-to-back yusho caliber performances and enough to at least get the sumo association considering the issue.

For Sumo Game, we have some drama of our own for senshuraku. In Makunouchi, we have a two way race for the yusho between Yokozuna Doitsuyama and EM14 Norizo both at 12-2. The two will be paired on day 15 in a winner take direct bout. Doitsuyama could pick up his third yusho, and first at a Yokozuna, while Norizo could collect his first title.

The Juryo yusho has already been decided with WJ7 Tsurugame (11-3) having a two matching lead over his nearest rival and mathematically eliminating the field.

In Makushita, the scenerio is a bit muddled, with a two person playoff guaranteed at the end of the day. As it stands now, we have four wrestlers tied at 12-2 with Em3 Tsuyoikaze being paired against Wm77 Kiriazuma and Em46 Kaiowashiyama matched against Wm61 Krokonowaka on senshuraku. After the winners have been determined it will come down to a points battle. Tsuyoikaze is in the best position with 111 points followed by Kaiowashiyama with 107. Krokonowaka and Kiriazuma are equal at 101 points.

Nagoya Basho 2006 - Day 13

After 13 days of the Nagoya Basho, we are getting to closer to breaching the 7 point mark for an overall tournament average. As it stands, we are now at a 7.08 average which means if the scoring for the final two days comes in at 6.5 we should finish just above seven points.

Going into the final weekend Yokozona Doitsuyama and EM14 Norizo are fighting it out for the yusho with an 11-2 record. One match off the pace, and still very much in the yusho hunt, is Em16 Asashimaru at 10-3. Komusubi Igiski and WM11 Sunibono are still mathematically alive if it comes down to any kind of tie break that involves 11 wins but it is a very slim chance that will happen.

In Juryo, WJ7 Tsurugame is the sole leader with a 10-3 record. He is followed closely by EJ6 Takanorappa and EJ12 Randomitsuki at 9-4. In Makushita, five members are in a dogfight for the yusho at 11-2. They include, Em3 Tsuyoikaze, Wm45 Qijuryo, Em46 Kaiowashiyama, Wm61 Krokonowaka and Wm77 Kiriazuma.

Nagoya Basho 2006 - Day 12

As we approach the final three days of the Nagoya Basho 2006 overall scoring for the tournament remains on a record pace. Day 12 had an scoring average of 7.35 which bumped the overall average upward to 7.11.

In Makunouchi after 12 days, Yokozuna Doitsuyama and EM14 Norizo are tied for the top spot at 10-2. Komusubi Igiski (9-3) who had been the runaway leader has slipped of late, dropping his second match in a row. He can put himself back in contention on day 13 since he will be paired with Norizo in what could be a yusho elimination match. WM11 Sunibono and EM16 Asashimaru are one loss off the pace of the co-leaders and still very much alive for the tournament title.

In Juryo, both WJ7 Tsurugame and EJ12 Randomitsuki won today to improve to 9-3 one back is EJ6 Takanorappa at 8-4. In Makushita, both Wm45 Qijuryo and Wm61 Krokonowaka were defeated today to fall to 10-2. This has now created a six way tie for the yusho that includes Em3 Tsuyoikaze, Em46 Kaiowashiyama, Em66 Saruwatari and Wm77 Kiriazuma.

Nagoya Basho 2006 - Day 11

Scoring average was down on day 11 of the Nagoya Basho to 5.89, however, the overall average remains a shade above the 7 mark at 7.09. WM16 Leonishiki (7-4) leads all other in total points with 91 which would put him on pace to finish the tournament with 124 points. It is possible, but the toughest day for picks are usually the final weekend of a basho.

In Makunouchi action for day 11, Komusubi Igiski was defeated by Sekiwake Heruwejima to fall to 9-2. As a result, we now have a four way tie for the yusho with Yokozuna Doitsuyama, WM11 Sunibono and EM14 Norizo all gaining ground on the leader of the last several days.

In Juryo, both WJ7 Tsurugame and EJ12 Randomitsuki lost today to fall to 8-3. This has put WJ1 Mushi and EJ6 Takanorappa, who were both victorious, within striking distance of the leaders at 7-4. In Makushita, a loss by Wm77 Kiriazuma has now made it a two way race for the yusho with Wm45 Qijuryo and Wm61 Krokonowaka at 10-1.

Nagoya Basho 2006 - Day 10

Although picks have become harder in the second week due to power matching and sanyaku foes facing each other, scoring for the tournament has remained an all time high of 7.21. If this pace continues we could easily finish the 15 day event above the 7 mark, a first for Sumo Game. It also appears as if the most points in a basho record will be easily shattered as more than two dozen participants have point averages exceding 7.80 which would break the current record of 117.

In Makunouchi after 10 days, Komusubi Igiski continues to be the front runner at 9-1 with Yokozuna Doitsuyama, WM11 Sunibono, EM14 Norizo and EM16 Asashimaru all picking up there kachikoshi today and remain in the yusho hunt with an 8-2 mark.

A day ten loss by WJ7 Tsurugame has tightened up the Juryo yusho race with Tsurgame and EJ12 Randomitsuki sitting on a 8-2 mark. A large group of six are two losses off the pace at 6-4. In Makushita Wm45 Qijuryo, Wm61 Krokonowaka and Wm77 Kiriazuma are fighting it out at 9-1.

Nagoya Basho 2006 - Nakabi

Nakabi saw yet another torrid day ending up in the record books. This time as the fourth highest all-time scoring day at 8.36, nearly matching day six's score of 8.58. A total of 50 wrestlers picked up a perfect 10 for the day. Amaziningly, Yokozuna Doitsuyama picked up his third perfect score of the Nagoya Basho and is well on his way to a 'most points in a basho' record which is set by Heruwejima and Gaijingai at 117.

In Makunouchi action at Nakabi, Komusubi Igiski and WM11 Sunibono are co-leaders at 7-1 followed a group of four others at 6-2 including the Yokozuna. In Juryo, WJ7 Tsurugame remains on top the leader board with a 7-1 record and is followed by EJ1 Kaiowaka, WJ10 Aobanoniji and EJ12 Randomitsuki. In Makushita, sole-leader Wm36 Sakanotori fell to 7-1 today after being defeated by Em31 Shiyonofuji who scored a perfect day. As a result, there is now a 7 way tie for the Makushita yusho.

Nagoya Basho 2006 - Day 7

With the completion of the first week of competition for the Nagoyo Basho, overall scoring continues at a record pace of 7.08. Day seven's scoring average of 6.79 was still strong but did put a slight dent in the tournament numbers.

In Makunouchi action today, a loss by WM12 Romanohana to EM12 Heikotoriki reduced the number of one loss wrestlers to 4. Komusubi Igiski and EM14 Norizo, who are both 6-1, have a slight advantage in total points with 56. EM16 Asashimaru is sitting on 55 points and WM11 Sunibono has 51.

In Juryo, WJ7 Tsurugame continues to be the sole leader at 6-1 with five others at 5-2. In Makushita, Wm36 Sakanatori is the last player to have a perfect record, and is all alone in the top spot as Em36 Kotoniko and Wm77 Kiriazuma were upended today to fall to 6-1.

Nagoya Basho 2006 - Day 6

For Sumo Game, day 6 of the Nagoya Basho was truly one for the record books. Overall scoring for the day was a blazing 8.58 and was good enough to rank as the second highest scoring day of all-time. A total of 32 participants registered a perfect 10 with three matches on the day ending in a 10-10 tie break. Yokozuna Doitsuyama picked up his second perfect day of the tournament with a victory over EM2 Mariohana.

As far as the yushu hunt is concerned, a loss by sole leader WM12 Romanohana has made the Makunouchi race much tighter with five wrestlers at 5-1. Komusubi Igiski keeps chugging along at this early stage and hopes to pick up his fifth career yusho.

In Juryo, a loss by J12 Tenkuukaikatsu has allowed WJ7 Tsurugame to equal his mark of 5-1. A huge pack of nine others are one match off the lead pace at 4-2. There was no change in the leader board of the Makushita division as all three co-leaders won today to remain undefeated at 6-0, with Wm77 Kiriazuma picking up his first perfect score of his career.

Nagoya Basho 2006 - Day 5

After day 5 of the Nagoya Basho overall scoring remains a high 6.84. With the exception of Kotooshu, who is struggling with a 3-2 mark, the Ozeki's and Yokozona are performing as expected. This is making for high daily scores.

With a loss by WM11 Sunibono to EM6 Hermanosho on day five, WM12 Romanohana becomes the sole leader of the Makunouchi division. Both Sunibono and Hermanosho are 4-1 and join 5 others at the same mark including four time Makunouchi yusho holder Komusubi Igiski.

In Juryo, WJ12 Tenkuukaikatsu continues to set the pace at 5-0 with WJ1 Mushi, WJ7 Tsurugame and WJ10 Aobanoiji at 4-1. In Makushita, after five days, the number of undefeated wrestlers have been trimmed to three: Em36 Kotoniko, Wm36 Sakanatori and Wm77 Kiriazuma.

Nagoya Basho 2006 - Day 4

Overall scoring for day 4 of the Nagoya Basho dipped slightly to 6.35 with the upsets to Baruto and Wakanosato. However, scoring for the tournament remains a strong 6.85. In Makunouchi, two wrestlers, WM11 Sunibono and WM12 Romanohana remain undefeated to sit at top of the leaderboard at 4-0. They are followed closely by a sizeable pack that includes the Yokozuna Doitsuyama and Komusubi Igiski at one loss off the pace. In Juryo, WJ12 Tenkuukaikatsu is the sole leader at 4-0 and is followed by a group of five others at 3-1. In Makushita, the undefeated wrestlers have been whittled to 8 including former Ozeki Shakagatake and Wm77 Kiriazuma.

Nagoya Basho 2006 - Day 3

With the top eight most chosen rikishi winning today scoring was a very high 7.78, just missing the highest scoring days list by a small margin. Nine participants picked up perfect days including Yokozuna Doitsuyama. The leader board in all divisions have thinned somewhat especially in Makunouchi and Juryo.

In Makunouchi, WM2 Gaijingai, WM4 Yumezukuri, WM11 Sunibono, WM12 Romanohana and WM16 Leonishiki are off to fast starts at 3-0. In Juryo, WM7 Tsurugame and WJ12 Tenkuukaikatsu are co-leaders. In Makushita, 14 members, including Wm77 Kiriazuma, are 3-0 after three days.

Nagoya Basho 2006 - Days 1 and 2

Welcome all to the Nagoya Basho 2006. We hope that everyone is itching for some sumo action after a six week rest. The Nagoya Basho is notorious for a drop in participating players due to the summer holidays but this year we are only 8 members shy from the Natsu Basho numbers with a total of 184 at shonichi.

We have some interesting news to report at this point: the return, or shall we say, the reincarnation of our first Yokozuna Kirinoumi. Sitting a the near bottom of the banzuke, Wm77 Kiriazuma has nowhere to go but up, however, as Yokozuna, Kirinoumi, who retired in November of 2003, compiled a fine record of 147-93-45 with two Makunouchi yusho and 3 jun-yusho. Welcome back and good luck!

Day one saw some low scoring with an overall average of 5.7 due in large part by the upset of Ozeki Hakuho who was chosen by 99% of all wrestlers. Day two rebounded nicely with a 7.57 average. Em49 Tristanohana and Wm64 Toljokinodo both scored their first perfect day of their Sumo Game career.
