Kyushu Basho 2012 - Day 15

Sumo Game has been existence going on thirteen years now and never before has this ever happened, a zensho yusho in any of the divisions. Kotoedo will be officially recognized as the first to achieve this milestone as he went on to capture the Makushita title and dominated from the first week to finish with three wins over the field. The thing to think about is that since its inception, Sumo Game has had between 9000 and 10000 total number of participants and this is the first time, thus, arguably, making the odds of a zensho yusho about 10000 to 1.

In Makunouchi, EM2 Andoreasu won his third title with an 11-4 effort by defeating WM2 Susanoo in a direct confrontation. Kyokuhagyo was awared the Ginosho and Kantosho special prizes while Sekiwake Randomitsuki was also awarded the Ginosho. In Juryo,WJ6 Maiku picked up the yusho with a thin one point lead over EJ12 Jakusotsu in a playoff.

Kyushu Basho 2012 - Day 14

Going into the final day of the Kyushu Basho one of the divisions has already been decided as Wm40 Kotoedo now has a three match lead over the rest of the field in the Makushita division. At this point, however, is that Kotoedo is now 14-0 and going into senshuraku can become Sumo Game's first ever zensho yusho winner with a final victory. Good luck.

In Makunouchi division it comes down to a single head-to-head match between co-leaders as both EM2 Andoreasu and WM2 Susanoo at 10-4. The winner takes the spoils. Our last remaining Ozeki, Hokuro is 7-7 after fourteen days and needs to get his kachikoshi or become kadoban for the first tournament of 2013.

In Juryo, the yusho chase is muddled but not completely out of control. Going into the final day we have six members statistically alive. First off at 10-4, WJ6 Maiku, EJ12 Jakusotsu and WJ12 Chisaiyama are co-leaders. Should one win and the other two lose, then the winner takes the title uncontested. If two or all three improve to 11-4, then there will be a playoff. Chisaiyama holds a slim two point lead over Jakusotsu and a three point lead over Maiku, 97 over 95 and 94. Should all three lose then anyone in the second tier, EJ8 Oskanohana, EJ9 Gonzaburrow and WJ10 Fatakiyama, that manages to pick up a 10th win could also join a playoff.

Kyushu Basho 2012 - Day 13

Going into the final weekend of the Kyushu Basho 2012 EM2 Andoreasu and WM2 Susanoo both improved to 9-4 to remain on top of an ever thinning field of contenders. In Juryo, WJ6 Maiku is the sole leader at 10-3 while in Makushita, Wm40 Kotoedo is still perfect at 13-0 and has now eliminated all but Wm46 Mainoumi from the title chase.

Kyushu Basho 2012 - Day 12

On day twelve of the Kyushu Basho, the number of participants that found themselves on top of the leader board at this stage was cut in half to five. As it stands now, EM2 Andoreasu, WM2 Susanoo, EM6 Bunijiman, WM11 Ganzohnesushi and W12 Yassier are battling it out in one of the closest yusho chases in several years. Since there will be no head-to-head matches on day thirteen, it is possible that the title hunt remains cluttered going into the final weekend and setting the stage for a complicated yusho scenario.

In Juryo, WJ6 Maiku, WJ10 Fatakiyama and EJ12 Jakusotsu continue to lead the division with a 9-3 mark. In Makushita, Wm40 Kotoedo improved to 12-0 and is only three wins away from the first zensho yusho in Sumo Game history. A further win by Kotoedo would statistically eliminate all but Wm46 Mainoumi who is holding on to a slim chance to catch the leader at 10-2.

Kyushu Basho 2012 - Day 11

It was a wild finish on day 11 of the Kyushu Basho as both Yokozunas Hakuho and Harumafuji were defeated members of the Sadogatake beya. First up was Harumafuji who was quickly dropped to the clay by Kotoshogiku who desperately need the win to remove his kadoban label. Harumafuji left the arena with an flustered look on his face knowing that the loss was somewhat embarrassing. Moments later, Kotooshu and Hakuho squared off with Kotooshu dominating the match from start to finish leaving the other Yokozuna with a surprised look on his face as well. Kotooshu was able to remove his kadoban label and will return next year as a full fledged Ozeki. As a result of all the upsets the leader board was unchanged but yushu hunt did tighten up considerably.

In Makunochi action the leader board fell into disarray yet again as no less than ten members are in the yusho hunt with a 7-4 record. On day 12, two 7-4 wrestlers, EM4 Natsunoyama and EM6 Bunijiman will square off with the winner getting a kachikoshi and likely a chance to compete in the final few days stretch run for the yusho. In Juyro, WJ6 Maiku, WJ10 Fatakiyama and EJ12 Jakusotsu are co-leaders at 8-3. In Makushita, Wm40 Kotoedo is still on a tear at 11-0 and now owns a two match lead over the field.

Kyushu Basho 2012 - Day 10

At day ten of the Kyushu basho, sole leader of the Makunochi division WM Susanoo saw a four match winning streak snapped to drop to 7-3. Going into the final five days of the tournament Susanoo now joins WM3 Chocshoporyu, WM11 Ganzohnesushi and WM12 Yassier for co-leadership. In Juryo, WJ10 Fatakiyama picked up a kachikoshi while pulling away slightly from the rest of the field. One match down is WJ6 Maiku and EJ12 Jakusotsu at 7-3. In Makushita, Wm40 Kotoedo improved to 10-0 and now has a one win lead over Wm21 Titonhana and Wm46 Mainoumi.

Kyushu Basho 2012 - Day 9

Day nine of the Kyushu Basho became mired in controversy as the bout between Harumafuji and Goeido took an unusual twist. After Harumafuji was forced to the edge of the dohyo it appeared to at least one of the judges that the Shin-Yokozuna had accidentally stepped out and the match was stopped. The judges then had a debate that last for several minutes while both rikishi waited outside the ring with confused looks on their faces. It was later determined that the judge was mistaken and the match was started over again with the Yokozuna easily forcing Goeido out of the ring and thus handing him his first loss of the tournament.

In Makunouchi, WM2 Susanoo became the sole leader while improving to 7-2 for the basho. One loss off the pace are five others including WM3 Chocshoporyu and WM4 Gaijingai who will face off in a head-to-head match on day 10. In Juryo, WJ10 Fatakiyama and EJ12 Jakusotsu are co-leaders at 7-2 while in Makushita, Wm40 Kotoedo upped his winning streak to nine to remain undefeated.

Kyushu Basho 2012 - Day 8

At Nakabi the log jam at the top of the leader board of the Makunochi division was reduced to just two names as both WM2 Susanoo and EM5 Derosa shook off tight scoring to improve to 6-2 for the tournament. However, in Juryo division things tightened up considerably after leader WJ7 Kinkaizan picked up his second kuroboshi of the Kyushu basho and now joins EJ6 Mukuho, EJ8 Oskanohana, WJ10 Fatakiyama and EJ12 Jakusotsu with and indentical 6-2 mark. In Makushita, WM40 Kotoedo continues to lead the division while becoming the first member to pick up a kachikoshi. Wm5 Bolo, Wm21 Titonohana, Wm44 Minimaruko and Wm46 Mainoumi are one match down at 7-1.

Kyushu Basho 2012 - Day 7

At the end of the first week of the Kyushu basho, average scores were high enough to crack the 8 point mark but just missed out of the highest scoring days list by a couple of fraction of points. In Makunouchi division things were thrown into disarray yet again this tournament as sole leader WM4 Gaijingai saw his sole leadership turn into six way tie after falling to 5-2. Joining Gaijingai for co-leadership are Sekiwake Randomitsuki, EM2 Andoreasu, WM2 Susanoo, EM5 Derosa and WM12 Yassier. As it stands now, the leader board is chock full of former yusho winners with a grand total of 12 upper division titles among them.

In Juryo, WJ7 Kinkaizan continues to set the pace at 6-1 while in Makushita, Wm40 Kotoedo remains perfect at 7-0.

Kyushu Basho 2012 - Day 6

After six days of the Kyushu basho all three of the divisions have started to fall into a standard bell shaped curve and thus we can now name some early leaders of the tournament. In Makunouchi, WM4 Gaijingai has put together a four match winning streak to improve to 5-1 to become the sole leader. In Juryo, WJ7 Kinkaizan and WJ10 Fatakiyama are both 5-1 to share the top spot of the divison while in Makushita, Wm40 Kotoedo is the last participant to remain undefeated at 6-0 to become the person to beat going into the mid tournament weekend.

Scoring for the Kyushu basho remains high at 6.97 despite day six dropping off a bit at 6.12.

Kyushu Basho 2012 - Day 4

With the ten most selected wrestlers winning their bouts, scoring was very high for day 4 at 8.32. It was good enough to barely register among the high scoring days at #23 on the all time list. A total of 18 players were able to notch a perfect 10. In Makunouchi, a rarity has occurred as nobody has survived the early start without a kuroboshi and as result the division is already in a free for all with more than a dozen members at 3-1. In Juryo, EJ14 Takanosushi is the sole leader at 4-0. In Makushita, seven player are still undefeated at 4-0.

Kyushu Basho 2012 - Day 2

Welcome to the final tournament of 2012, the Kyushu Basho. It is the start of an new 'era' of sumo with the advancement of Harumafuji to the rank of Yokozuna and for the first time in nearly 3 years we have a balanced Banzuke with a Grand Champion at both the East and the West slots. Harumafuji, being on the smaller side of things, is now going to have to 'bring it' each tournament else he finds himself with a career that might be shortened, since now, as a Yokozuna, he must put himself in a position for the title on consistent basis or be forced out of the sport. Hopefully, Harumafuji can prove himself worthy of the rank in the tournaments to come.

In Sumo Game, 136 players are participating this time making things a bit soft, especially in the Makunochi and Juryo divisions. On the other hand, those that have been trying to break into the top division might find rapid advancement next time around should they pull off a winning tournament. In Sanyaku, Hokuro is the sole Ozeki with a decent shot at a Yokozuna run should he win at least 12. With Doitsuyama and Randomitsuki failing to get back to the Ozeki rank in September we now have four members in the Sekiwake slot. Unfortunately, the only Sekiwake with a decent shot at promotion was Kogaratsu who kyujo this time around. Good luck to all the competitors and enjoy the action!
