Kyushu Basho 2015 - Day 15

With the final day in the history books things ended up finishing in the simplest possible fashion. Flohru won his bout with ease to take a record-equalling fourth Makuuchi yusho.

Gurowake kept his cool and got the job done in Juryo for a 12-3 record and certain promotion to the big leagues where he obviously belongs. And Tainosen also ensured he wouldn't be in a play-off by overcoming Kazemoto to take the Makushita yusho.

Kyushu Basho 2015 - Day 14

Flohru won his seventh straight bout and eliminated rival Chocshoporyu from the yusho race. He is now the sole leader with ten wins. Komusubi Andoreasu overcame Hokuromitsu to keep his chances alive and Yassier has quietly racked up nine wins to put in his marker. However, thanks to Flohru's good score, only Andoreasu has a realistic chance of taking the yusho from him if he wins and Flohru loses tomorrow. Andoreasu is only one point behind Flohru so scoring will be an important consideration. Hokuromitsu is 8 points behind and is therefore only in with a chance of jun yusho.

There's an exciting situation in Juryo as the yusho will be decided by a single death match - Gurowake versus Kamakiriyama. Gurowake is one win ahead but his score falls far short of his rival and so a loss would also mean a tie-break yusho loss.

In Makushita, a win for Tainosen will give him the yusho but a loss may let in three rivals, two of whom have superior scores. These two - Chiyokoko and Emiroo fight each other tomorrow and the winner will be hoping that Tainosen loses to Kazemoto. Kazemoto can only play the role of spoiler, however, as their score is too low to challenge the others.

Kyushu Basho 2015 - Day 12

Drama at the top of the Makuuchi leaderboard as both leaders lost, letting in Flohru. All the other pursuers missed a chance to join the party. Chocshoporyu and Hokuromitsu are brought up the order to face sanyaku foes tomorrow while Flohru faces points leader Bill.

Gurowake marches on to his tenth win in Juryo and remains two points clear. And the trio of Tainosen, Orandashoho and Chiyokoko lead Makushita, closely tailed by a pack of five.

It's been a woeful performance record-wise by the sanyaku this tournament (although the sanyaku average is the highest divisional one as usual) and this reflects the rather unpredictable nature of this tournament. Two sekiwake already have losing records and only Andoreasu has 7 wins. We could be seeing a major clearout and some banzuke luck for the hopefuls near the top of Maegashira in January.

Kyushu Basho 2015 - Day 11

After day 11 we have two leaders in Makuuchi: Chocshoporyu and Hokuromitsu. With the poor showing by the sanyaku, the Maegashira have run riot - the chasing pack of six does not contain any sanyaku wrestlers.

Gurowake has taken firm command of Juryo with a two-win lead, while Makushita is looking to be a close affair with four leaders all with 9-2 records.

And sadly Sekiwake ScreechingOwl's ozeki run came to an end today and he now faces a battle to reach a winning record, needing three wins out of four bouts.

Kyushu Basho 2015 - Day 8

Day 8 proved to be the fourth highest-scoring day in Sumo Game history and there were plenty of hard-luck stories as hordes of players lost with perfect tens. Mainoumi lost in Makuuchi today, paying the price for unwisely trusting Endo. He falls into second place with Chocshoporyu. Hokuromitsu is the sole leader with only one loss.

Gurowake and Haruibono are neck and neck in Juryo. And the leading pack in Makushita is now five-strong after Futoitsuru surrendered their perfect record.

Kyushu Basho 2015 - Day 7

Makuuchi is now led by two Maegashira wrestlers: Mainoumi and Hokuromitsu with 6-1 records as Bill and Yassier lost.

In Juryo we have four co-leaders, including gaming prodigy Gurowake and veterans Fujisan and Gaijingai. And in Makushita the leader is the game's sole unbeaten player, Futoitsuru.

In other news, promotion hopeful Sekiwake ScreechingOwl suffered a fourth loss and now needs to win seven out of eight to reach the ozeki rank.

Kyushu Basho 2015 - Day 5

Day 5 is in the books and the top division is led by a large group of Maegashira wrestlers with one loss, including veteran former Ozeki Sumio.

Gaijingain, Haruibono and Fujisan lead the way in Juryo, while the only three unbeaten players in the game head the field in Makushita.

Kyushu Basho 2015 - Day 3

Welcome all players to the final tournament of 2015, the Kyushu Basho.

Only one sanyaku wrestler has a chance of ozeki promotion this time - Sekiwake ScreechingOwl, who just missed out last basho, needs 10 wins to get the nod and he's off to a good start with a 2-1 record.

The top Makuuchi division has already been whittled down to five leaders, of which only one hails from sanyaku: Sekiwake Kogaratsu.

Amazingly Juryo already has a sole leader - perennial wanna-come-back-to-Makuuchi Gaijingai is the only unbeaten player in our second division. And Makushita has the usual mass of leaders at this early stage.
