Kyushu Basho 2016 - Day 15

Of the three leaders only Metzinowaka won his bout today and so - after more than 13 years of playing Sumo Game - he has his first ever yusho in any division. Congratulations! And it was no accident: he scored extremely well and deserved the victory.

In Juryo yesterday's nightmare scenario for Hironoumi duly came true as he lost and Kaiomitsuki won. The play-off was taken easily by virtue of Kaiomitsuki's greatly superior points total. And long-time leader Airisshu held his nerve to take the Makushita tournament with a second-straight 12-3 performance.

Congratulations to all the winners. Have a great holiday period and we hope to see you back here again in January 2017.

Kyushu Basho 2016 - Day 14

More ding-dong antics in Makuuchi as Yassier wins bragging rights for Munich against Metzinowaka. Andrasoyamawaka also won so we have a three-way lead. None of them fight each other on senshuraku so the trailing duo of Takanosushi and Ahogeyama are also in with a mathematical chance. Metzinowaka and Takanosushi are way ahead on points to it's advantage Metzinowaka, who will probably just need a win to seal the yusho. He faces the extremely talented Sekiwake Survivor tomorrow so will have to work hard for glory.

In Juryo Hironoumi is leading but a loss may let in Kaiomitsuki, who has a far superior points total. And in Makushita, Airisshu is still the sole leader, but a loss would spell disaster as any one of four pursuers could take the yusho in a play-off.

Kyushu Basho 2016 - Day 13

Yassier lost for the second straight day so it is Metzinowaka's turn for pole position. The two frontrunners fight each other tomorrow. The other main contender, Andrasoyamawaka, will be hoping for a chance for yusho on the final day.

In Juryo Hironoumi lost, giving Kaiomitsuki a glimpse of hope. And Airisshu won again in Makushita to maintain his lead over two pursuers, Achiyama and Akoushousan.

Kyushu Basho 2016 - Day 12

Sole leader Yassier lost today, letting Metzinowaka back into the fray. Andrasoyamawaka is the only player who is one off the pace.

In Juryo Hironoumi is now two wins clear and is the hot favourite to take the title and certain promotion. And Airisshu maintains lone dominance over Makushita with a 10-2 record.

Kyushu Basho 2016 - Day 10

Day 10 is in the books and Makuuchi has a sole leader in Yassier as he takes advantage of Metzinowaka's loss today. Rupatengu joins the chasing group of two players.

Juryo also has a sole leader in Hironoumi. And Airisshu take possession of the Makushita lead.

Finally, Sekiwake Kitakachiyama's ozeki bid has failed after a catastrophic six-day losing streak. Now it is all about damage control.

Kyushu Basho 2016 - Day 8

The middle of the basho has been reached and we have a much starker picture of the yusho races. It's a tale of twos. Makuuchi is led now by two 7-1 Maegashira wrestlers: a German pairing - Yassier and Metzinowaka - and it looks like it's a battle between Berlin and Munich.

Meanwhile in Juryo, we have two leaders too! Hironoumi and Wakamasuto are also 7-1. And surprise, surprise! Makushita is led by two 7-1 players: Airisshu (who I suspect is Irish) and Sakanotori.

The ozeki runs have gone from superb to disastrous, especially for Sekiwake Kitakachiyama, who went from 4-0 to 4-4. He still has a chance but will need to win six of the final seven, mostly against his fellow sanyaku rivals.

Kyushu Basho 2016 - Day 4

Sekiwake Kitakachiyama's ozeki run continues to run well as he improved today to 4-0 and a share of the lead with three other players. Sekiwake Survivor is now 3-1 and can only afford to lose two more.

In Juryo there are only two undefeated players remaining: Yamashiro and Wakamasuto. And in Makushita, unusually, there are only four players with perfect records remaining.

Kyushu Basho 2016 - Day 2

Hello and welcome all to the final tournament of the year - the Kyushu basho!

We have two ozeki runs this tournament. Sekiwake Survivor needs 12 wins and Sekiwake Kitakachiyama needs 10 to make the leap up. Both are off to perfect starts so good luck to them.

In Makuuchi a group of 11 players remain unbeaten, with Komusubi Gurowake among them along with the two ozeki promotion hopefuls.

The Juryo lead has already been whittled down to a group of only 5. And the lowest Makushita division is still in the process of forming.
