Haru Basho 2024 - Day 15
On a day of truly vintage Sumo Game carnage, sole leader ScreechingOwl lost his bout and allowed a host of other players to join him on 10 wins. However, his good scoring over the rest of the tournament allowed him to get over the line on a tie-break. A rare 10-5 yusho was the final win line. This is the Owl's fourth Makuuchi yusho, an impressive achievement. Congratulations! | Also very impressive was Kishikaisei, who achieved a zensho yusho in Juryo, something I believe is unprecented. Now only the Makuuchi division remains to be conquered in that regard. A likely promotion to Makuuchi awaits. | In Makushita two players finished with 13 wins but Takaryu outscored his rival to win his first Makushita yusho. | Congratulations to all the players. See you back here in May.

Haru Basho 2024 - Day 14
ScreechingOwl lost today but so did all his pursuers. With a four-point scoring advantage over his nearest rival, he is highly likely to win the yusho even if he loses tomorrow. | As noted yesterday, Kishikaisei has already won the Juryo yusho and he won again today. One more win for the zensho! | The same four leaders in Makushita all won and their scoring is quite similar so we could very well see a playoff on the final day! | Good luck to all the contenders!

Haru Basho 2024 - Day 13
ScreechingOwl won again to take the sole lead of the Makuuchi division. With his excellent scoring, one more win should be enough to take the big prize. He'll have his first chance against Flohru on day 14. | Kishikaisei kept his perfect streak going and easily wrapped up the Juryo yusho. He now will be hoping to go all the way for a 15-0 finish. | Makushita is very open with Achiyama's loss as Takaryu, Tokaido and Jopotosu took advantage. All the leaders have eleven wins.

Haru Basho 2024 - Day 12
Apologies for the late report...currently abroad. Should be OK for the rest of the basho. | With day 12 in the books the leaderboard in Makuuchi is topped by Ozeki Pandaazuma and ScreechingOwl with 9-3 records. The Owl has a five-point scoring advantage over the Panda and so will hope to just match him for wins over the final three days without letting any of the chasing pack of five Maegashira in the (zoo) door. | Kishikaisei is still perfect in Juryo and is 3 wins clear and therefore almost certain to take home the yusho very early. And Achiyama leads Makushita with 11 wins, one ahead of a group of seven hopefuls waiting for an opportunity.

Haru Basho 2024 - Day 9
Yesterday's leader Andonishiki lost and allowed four other players into the party. Former Sekiwake ScreechingOwl is one of them, and deservedly so as he is also the points leader. | Both Kishikaisei and Beeftank stayed perfect in Juryo and Makushita repectively. | And sadly Sekiwake Norizo's attempt to return to Ozeki the 'easy' way failed today as he fell to a sixth loss. Now he needs to focus on damage control and staying in the elite sanyaku division.

Haru Basho 2024 - Day 8
Former Ozeki Andonishiki takes the sole lead as we reach the mid-point of the tournament. Six hopefuls are one win behind, including Komusubi Kazutoyama. | Kishikaisei remains perfect in Juryo and is now two wins clear of his peers. And Beeftank leads all alone in Makushita, also with a perfect record. Seven players are in the chasing group.

Haru Basho 2024 - Day 6
Day six is in the books and we have a melee at the top of Makuuchi now that the final unbeaten holdout, Asashimaru. has lost one. Yokozuna Yumezukuri is the only sanyaku representative in a leading group of 8 players with 5-1 records. | Kishikaisei is perfect in Juryo, one win ahead of Frinkanohana. There are still four unbeaten in Makushita, including the talented Beeftank and newcomer Kikakitsune. | Sekiwake Norizo's quest for a quick Ozeki return is still in trouble as he has a 2-4 record. He needs to win 8 out of 9 to get back to the second rank.

Haru Basho 2024 - Day 2
Welcome all to the spring tournament of 2024! | Looking at the banzuke, Sekiwake Norizo needs 10 wins to return to the ozeki rank but he is off to the worst possible start. Ozeki Pandaazuma is kadoban and needs 8 wins to keep his rank. He is unbeaten so far. | Pandaazuma and Komusubi Flohru head the unbeaten field of eleven hopefuls in Makuuchi. The other divisions are still forming their leader boards and we will see how it looks later in the week. | Good luck to all the players!
