Pandazuma Yokozuna Promotion
The Sumo Game Association decided to promote Pandazuma back to the Yokozuna rank after his impressive Makuuchi Yusho as Ozeki. He is only the second Ozeki to win a tournament since 2010. The other one was Yumezukuri who was promoted to Yokozuna after his tournament victory as Ozeki in Aki 2021. Congratulations!

Kyushu Basho 2024 - Day 15
Once again we saw chaos at the top of the leader board. Of the contenders, only Kiriazuma won. He forced a tie-break with Ozeki Pandaazuma but Pandaazuma wins by virtue of superior scoring. That's a fifth Makuuchi yusho for Pandaazuma. | In Juryo Andrasoyama lost again and Gansekiiwa won again to force a tie but Andrasoyama won the yusho on scoring. Both players can expect a nice jump up into the Makuuchi division in January. | In Makushita Tosanoumi and Rinsan finished with fine 13-2 records. Tosanoumi won the tie on points scored. | | In banzuke news, Ozeki Pandaazuma has a chance of being considered for (re)-promotion to Yokozuna with 21 wins in two tournaments and a Makuuchi yusho. Although he is one win short of the 22-win requirement, he nevertheless has the most wins this year in the Makuuchi division fighting at the ozeki rank by quite a large margin. ;) The committee will deliberate! | Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks to everyone for taking part in 2024. See you all back here in the new year.

Kyushu Basho 2024 - Day 14
More drama as the two leaders lost. Ozeki Pandaazuma is still the sole leader but Komusubi Susanoo, Gonzaburow and Kiriazuma are one win behind. If Pandaazuma loses tomorrow and any of them win, a tie-break will ensue. Gonzaburow has the best chance in a tie as he is one point ahead in scoring, but he will have to get past new Ozeki Kakushoyamaii first, and the Ozeki needs a win to avoid kadoban. | In Juryo Andrasoyama lost to his main pursuer Gansekiiwa but he is still one win and three points ahead so he is very likely to win a tie-break even if he loses. | It's a similar story in Makushita as Tosanoumi leads Rinsan by one win but he is five points ahead in scoring so, once again, it's almost certainly going to the leader. | Good luck to all the contenders on the final day of the year!

Kyushu Basho 2024 - Day 13
Ozeki Pandaazuma returned to winning ways to gain an eleventh win. Gonzaburow won to stay one win behind. This is Gonzaburow's twentieth anniversary tournament and he has never won a Makuuchi yusho. He is the current points leader, however, so if he can force a tie-breaker with the leader, he will have a good chance of changing that. | Andrasoyama won again to stay two wins ahead and with his dominating score, he is almost certainly home and dry for a yusho. This performance is what one would expect from a former sekiwake. | In Makushita Tosanoumi is back in the sole lead. He has four players just one win behind to worry about.

Kyushu Basho 2024 - Day 12
Carnage at the top of the standings as four of the five leaders lost. Only Kaiowaka advanced with a win. Ozeki Pandaazuma still leads with 10 wins. | Andrasoyama won again to go 11-1 in Juryo. And yesterday's three leaders in Makushita also won again to keep up the excitement there.

Kyushu Basho 2024 - Day 11
Day eleven was a tricky day. Ozeki Pandaazuma came through a close match with Komusubi Susanoo to record a tenth win. Of yesterday's four chasers, only Gonzaburow won. He has a 9-2 record. | In Juryo Andrasoyama won again and is now two wins clear with four days remaining. And in Makushita Tosanoumi's streak finally ended. He now shares the lead with Toshishugisha and Rinsan.

Kyushu Basho 2024 - Day 10
Two-thirds of the tournament is done. Ozeki Pandaazuma won today while Gonzaburow lost to take the sole 9-1 lead. Komusubi Susanoo faces the leader tomorrow and he is one win behind with three others. | Andrasoyama now leads Juryo with 9 wins. Frinkanohana is just one win behind. And in Makushita our last unbeaten player is leading by himself. Can Tosanoumi go all the way and get a rare zensho yusho?

Kyushu Basho 2024 - Day 8
We have reached the midpoint of the tournament and things are starting to heat up and take shape. Ozeki Pandaazuma was unbeaten until today but he lost, allowing Gonzaburow to join him at the top of the leader board. Oskanohana would have been there too but for an unbelievable 10-10 loss against Balon. He is one win off the pace along with Yokozuna Yumezukuri, Komusubi Susanoo and Kaiowaka. | Andrasoyama and Metzinowaka lead Juryo with seven wins. And Toshishugisha and Tosanoumi are now the only unbeaten players remaining. They lead Makushita.

Kyushu Basho 2024 - Day 5
Day 5 is in the books and the only remaining unbeaten Makuuchi player is Ozeki Pandaazuma. Yokozuna Yumezukuri, Komusubi Andonishiki and Komusubi Susanoo are part of a chasing group of ten. | There are no undefeated players in Juryo. Six players lead with 4-1 records. And eight players in Makushita remain perfect as the leaderboard is whittled down.

Kyushu Basho 2024 - Day 3
Welcome all to the final tournament of the year, held as always in Fukuoka, Kyushu. | We welcome a new ozeki, actually a returning one, in the shape of Kakushoyamaii. He is off to a 2-1 start. | In the early stages we have six unbeaten Makuuchi wrestlers, including Ozeki Pandaazuma, Komusubi Andonishiki and Komusubi Susanoo. | Joaozan and Frinkanohana are unbeaten in Juryo. Makushita is of course still taking shape, unwieldy as it is. | Good luck to all the players!
