Nagoya Basho 2024 - Day 15
The focus this tournament has been on the long-time leader's incredible run to 11-0 but Trender was always just behind, quietly racking up the wins as well. On the final day they met on the virtual dohyo and Trender won the bout 7-6. They finished equal on points (joint top in Makuuchi) and so the tie-break is decided by the winner of their head-to-head bout. Congratulations to Trender on a fourth Makuuchi yusho. Both players can expect healthy promotions given the absolute carnage at the top of the banzuke. Five out of six of the sanyaku have demotable records so there will be a vacuum in September.
Juryo yusho winner Chelseayama lost today but it didn't matter. He'll be hoping for some banzuke luck and a promotion to the big time. Barusho came in for jun yusho with 11 wins.
In Makushita three players ended with 13 wins. Toshishugisha wins the tie by virtue of most points scored. That's a second Makuuchi yusho for the New Yorker.
Congratulations to all the winners. See you all in September.

Nagoya Basho 2024 - Day 14
Kakushoyamaii and Trender came through their tests and will meet tomorrow in a true death match, in that their scores are even, so even though Kakushoyamaii has a one-win advantage, the winner of the bout will win the tournament.
In Juryo Chelseayama won again and can celebrate a first-ever Juryo yusho. He already has a Makushita yusho in his collection so soon he'll be going for the full set among the big boys.
Makushita is more complicated. Bunbukuchagama lost so there are five players with 12 wins. Toshishugisha and and newcomer Tetsuyama have the advantage as they both top the scoring.
Good luck to all the contenders.

Nagoya Basho 2024 - Day 13
The carnage on the real dohyo extended to this contest as the two long-time leaders Kakushoyamaii and Trender lost for the second straight day. The conqueror of the leader today, former Ozeki Andonishiki, joined Trender at 10 wins, one behind the leader.
In Juryo Chelseayama won as his pursuers lost and he can now claim a yusho with one more win. In Makushita Bunbukuchagama has emerged as sole leader with 12 wins.

Nagoya Basho 2024 - Day 12
Kakushoyamaii's quest for a first-ever Makuuchi zensho yusho in Sumo Game came to an end today. Fortunately for him, his immediate pursuers also lost so he retains the sole lead with a fine 11-1 record. Trender remains a win behind.
In Juryo Chelseayama returned to winning ways. His chasing pack numbers two: Chindonya and Hakubayama.
Makushita is now led by Bunbukuchagama and Kabaryu, who actually had a 12-3 jun yusho in May. Keeping up the great work.

Nagoya Basho 2024 - Day 11
Kakushoyamaii marches on to an 11-0 record. Trender is one win behind. And only Andonishiki is one win behind that.
In Juryo Chelseayama went 8-0 but has lost two in three days. He still leads but four sharks are circling one win behind.
Bunbukuchagama, Clementesan and Kabaryu head the Makushita division with 10 wins. Six more hopefuls are waiting for a slip-up.

Nagoya Basho 2024 - Day 8
Nakabi, the middle day of the tournament, has passed. In Makuuchi Kakushoyamaii remains perfect and can celebrate the earliest possible kachikoshi. Trender is the only player in touching distance.
It's a similar story in Juryo, where Chelseayama is also 8-0. His nearest challengers are now two wins behind. There are no unbeaten players in Makushita. Nine players are vying for supremacy, all with seven wins.
And, sadly, we have to report that Sekiwake Sumio's ozeki promotion hopes must also go on hold for the moment. He and his fellow Sekiwake Chocshoporyu are now in a death battle to keep their current rank.

Nagoya Basho 2024 - Day 5
A third of the basho is over and two unbeaten Makuuchi players remain: Former Ozeki Kakushoyamaii and former Sekiwake Trender. Four rivals are one win behind, including Ozeki Pandaazuma and Komusubi Susanoo.
Chelseayama has emerged as the sole leader of Juryo and his high scoring proves it's a deserved lead. Four players are snapping at his tail. And the unwieldy behemoth known as Makushita has been whittled down to six players, including promising gamers Kajiyanosho and Bunbukuchagama.
Sekiwake Chocshoporyu's ozeki run is over in the worst possible fashion after a 0-5 start. Sekiwake Sumio is not out of it yet at 2-3 but he needs to start racking up wins asap.

Nagoya Basho 2024 - Day 2
Welcome all to the steamy Nagoya tournament!
Sekiwake Sumio and Sekiwake Chocshoporyu are on ozeki runs. Both need 11 wins to be considered for the jump up. Sumio has started 1-1 and Chocshoporyu is 0-2 so there is work yet to do.
In the early Makuuchi running, Ozeki Pandaazuma and Komusubi Susanoo are the fastest from sanyaku out of the blocks. They head a field of 11 unbeaten hopefuls.
Good luck to all the players!
