2009/03/31 - Cherry Blossom Report: Himeji
Himeji Castle
March 31, 2009 - opening (10-50%)
Himeji Castle is generally believed to be the most impressive castle in Japan. The castle is located one kilometer north of the main station, and can be seen right after exiting the building. There are about 1000 cherry trees on the castle grounds, including weeping cherry trees and early blooming varieties.
At the moment the cherry trees have only opened about 30%. There were medium level crowds today, and a fair amount of people taking part in cherry blossom viewing parties (hanami). Most parties were taking place at the Sannomaru Square, but there were others at the Senhime Peony Garden just to the west.
From April 3 to April 12, there will be an illumination of the cherry trees in the evening from 18:00 to 21:00 (last entry at 20:30).
