2017/05/02 - Fuji Shibazakura Festival
Today, I went to the Fuji Shibazakura Festival, a very popular flower festival at the base of Mount Fuji. Shibazakura is also known as phlox moss, and has flowers that resemble cherry blossoms (sakura). About seven varieties of shibazakura are planted at the site, and the most eye catching ones are of the deep pink McDaniel's Cushion variety. The festival is located about three kilometers south of Lake Motosuko in the Fuji Five Lakes region, offering a must-see view of about 800,000 shibazakura flowers with Mount Fuji as a backdrop on clear days.
In my visit this morning, I found most of the shibazakura flowers to be at their best viewing. Mostly sunny weather is forecast for the second half of the Golden Week holidays and I expect a lot more people to visit over the rest of this week. The best viewing period for the flowers should continue for the rest of this week and into early next week before they start declining.
The Fuji Shibazakura Festival is open daily from 8:00 to 17:00 until May 28. During the Golden Week holidays, the hours are extended from 6:00 to 18:00. It is recommended to visit earlier in the day for good visibility as well as to avoid traffic congestion during the holidays. Entry into the venue cost 600 yen per person. While paid parking is available, it is advisable to visit using public transport to reduce congestion on the roads leading to the festival grounds.
