2013/09/21 - Autumn Color Report: Kurodake
On my second and last reporting day in Daisetsuzan National Park I visited Sounkyo Onsen to climb Mount Kurodake. Kurodake is almost 2000 meters high, but thanks to a ropeway and chairlift, tourists can reach the summit in just a one hour hike from the upper chairlift station.
The colors along the chairlift and the lower sections of the steep hiking trail were still at an early state, but the slopes near the summit were burning with orange and red nanakamado bushes. Over the coming weeks, the colors will gradually move down the slope down into the valley where they should reach the town of Sounkyo around mid October.
