September 28, 2014 - Exploring Kyoto's southern temples
This day we decided to explore some of the countless temples of Kyoto. Our first stop was at the Higashi and Nishi Honganji temples, both don't have entrance fee and are open from very early in the morning. After taking off your shoes you can walk on the wooden corridors around and on the tatami floors in the main buildings freely.
We had a very nice weather so from here we went on foot to Toji temple. Combined tickets can be purchased at the entrance which can be used to enter Kanchi-in and seasonal exhibitions. This temple is most famous about its five-storied pagoda, but all the other buildings are also very impressive.
It took us around 40 minutes to walk to our next stop, Tofukuji. We were getting a bit tired so it was nice to sit down and enjoy the sight of the powerful Sanmon Gate and spend some time just looking at the famous gardens around the Hojo.
Before going back to our hotel we decided to visit Fushimi Inari Taisha. We almost got lost a few times while wandering around the little streets between the two temples, but finally ended up at the main entrance about one hour before sundown. We didn't have enough time and energy left to go all the way to the top of the hill, but despite the crowd at the lower part of the path we still managed to take some nice photos.
