October 1, 2014 - A day in Kyoto about Shinto
This day we planned to visit some of Kyoto's Shinto shrines. We started the day by buying a Kyoto Sightseeing One-day Pass Card and got on a bus Shimogamo shrine.
Around the shrine one of the most interesting thing to see was the Sakaki tree. This tree is located just outside the main Romon Gate near Aioi-sha shrine. Renri no Sakaki is actually the product of two intertwined trees that actually merge to one. It symbolizes the lasting ties and couples often come here to pray for long relations.
We spent about an hour at Shimogamo before we continued our trip to Kamigamo Shrine. There is a direct bus between the two shrines and both stops are almost at the entrances, this made travelling very easy for us.
Next we headed to Kitano Tenmangu, where the yearly Zuiki matsuri was beginning. We just missed the departure of the festival but managed to get ahead of them so we could enjoy watching the long line of participants dressed up in traditional clothes.
After watching the festival we went back to Kitano Tenmangu and explored the shrine's grounds.
The next Shinto shrine in our list was Heian Shrine. We were very happy when we found out that there is a direct bus from Kitano Tenmangu to Heian Shrine, but it was awfully crowded so we got a little taste of the rush-hour public transport in Kyoto too.
Our last stop was Yasaka Shrine what was not in our original travel plan. After Heian Shrine we decided to take a little walk towards the Gion district and we found ourselves at the entrance of Yasaka Shrine.
On our way back to the hotel we passed by one of the strangest storefront I saw in Japan.
