October 5, 2014 - Rainy days in Itoigawa
Itoigawa is a seaside city in southern Niigata Prefecture and is famous for jade gemstone. This is the only place in Japan where jade can be found, thanks to the Fossa-Magna, the border between the Eurasian and North-American plates. This was also the place where the 2012 We Love Japan Tour finished.
The weather was not so nice while we were at Itoigawa, because a typhoon was approaching. We still spent some time on the seaside to find out if we are lucky enough to find jade gems. We weren't lucky enough, but gathered some nice stones as a souvenirs.
We also visited the nearby geopark, where the border between the two plates can be seen. It was nice to be standing on both plates at the same time. This was the place where the two travel bloggers of the 2012 We Love Japan Tour met.
On the next day, despite the rainy weather we went on a bike tour to explore the surroundings.
We wanted to get to the beach while the weather was a little bit better, but we got lost on our way a few times. I don't exactly know how, but we finally arrived at the harbor and found a nice lookout tower.
