January 9, 2020 - Satsuma Food - Kagoshima
Some people say that good food in Japan can cost a lot of money. This is true but if you visit less seen places then you can taste nice food at reasonable prices. For example - the meal I had last night (the first 8 photos) was in a large private room at an onsen resort for only 9000 yen for a single. Note the food on the right above I think was sea snail.
I've never really been a fan of shabu shabu - but if it's good ingredients then I've found that it can be reasonably nice.
A few nights ago I stayed at a chain business hotel which had a restaurant attached which was run by fishermen. Let's just say that it was nice - fresh and strangely cheap. It's was also extremely busy with locals coming here on a Tuesday night.
When I stayed near Tarumizu I visited a vinegar factory which overlooked Kagoshima bay with Sakurajima in the background. The also had a swanky restaurant with food that really played off the sour flavors. I did not take a picture of the soup which was one of the best I've ever eaten. It was also very filling.
My dinner at Tarumizu. I expected this to be a small meal but I was wrong. It was also nice but smokey using a real fire for my shabu shabu.
Sometimes I can't believe how cheap some places can be when you look around and use more Japanese websites. I'm currently staying at a golf resort which came with dinner, breakfast, onsen and a killer view from my hotel room for around 9000 yen a night. The meal apart from being way too much was also quite nice.
The restaurant was part french and part Japanese. This was chicken breast with a cheese sauce. Strangely it was not too rich and the mushrooms really accentuated the flavors.
I have not eaten this well for a long time and most of my meals on Yakushima or Honshu were much simpler. I guess that Kagoshima just has good food and because it's off season and it's normally quieter here with less tourists then prices tend to be lower. My next post will be my drive from Iriki to Kagoshima.
