February 4, 2013 - Spectacular shrines and superb sea
Do you like shrines? Do you like the sea? Are you interested in traveling to somewhere a little off the beaten track? Then come to the Oki Islands!
This entrance to this spectacular shrine is located 20 minutes drive from Beppu Port. From the carpark, walk through the lush mountain forest, stopping off at various places to take photos of the great view, before arriving in front of the impressive Japanese cedar tree which guards the Takuhi Shrine.
If you look up, you will see something beautiful!
The forest in many areas of the Oki Islands has been left untouched.
Many of the plants in this forest are rare species, including some endemic species. There are many interesting insects and birds in the forest too.
If you drive to Onimai Lookout (35 minutes from Beppu Port) you can see Mt. Takuhi (452m). In the centre of this mountain is Takuhi Shrine. This mountain and the shrine are like guardians of the Sea of Japan, and many sailors and fisherman come to this place to pray for safety at sea. Takuhi Shrine also features in the Kojiki (document written 1300 years ago, oldest historical document in Japan) and in Japanese mythology.
