March 19, 2014 - Walk the old Tokaido from Okitsu to Shizuoka
After taking times at Seikenji temple (´Œ©Ž›), I continued to westbound walk the old Tokaido.
Just 3 minutesf walk from the temple, I got to gZagyosoh (¿‹™‘‘) , that was constructed as the vacation cottage of Saionji Kinmochi (¼‰€Ž›Œö–], 1849-1940), the 7th prime minister of Japan.
gZah means in this sentence gsit down leisurelyh, and gGyoh does gfishingh. gSoh means a cottage. As this name indicates, when Kinmochi moved to this Okitsu town far remote from Tokyo after resigning as a leader of this country, he intended to spend days with fishing only and doing nothing rest.
But his political heirs paid visit him almost every day after he retired and escaped into this hermitage and some important decisions were made in this cottage.
Ironically, Zagyoso must have played a role of the second diet building as the result.
The original cottage was moved to Meiji-Mura (–¾Ž¡‘º) in Inuyama (Œ¢ŽR) city, Gifu prefecture and has been preserved there. So the one in Okitsu was that reconstructed.
Frankly speaking, the original one in Meiji-Mura has a good old taste inside but here in Okitsu looks a little bit artificial. But the latter is admission free.
After dropping in Zagyoso, I walked west to Shizuoka.
Please let me write down the conclusion first about this part.
There is nothing interesting the rest 13 km long. Most part of this old trail were already swallowed up into heavy traffic National route 1 or other main roads in parallel with it.
If you like to take a shower of fume emitted from the large number of cars and see ugly gpachinkoh shops, this place is quite appropriate.
The period buildings that make you recall the good old days have almost gone without a few exceptions as follow.
Shimizu city (Now Shizuoka cityfs Shimizu ward) is said to be the cradle of boyfs football.
Until 30 years ago, when football was not as popular as baseball among young generation in this country, over a half of members of Japanfs football national team were from Shizuoka.
Near Sakurabashi (÷‹´) station of Shizuoka Railways (ɪ“S“¹), you can find gOiwake Yokan (’Ç•ª—rã»)h shop that has been operated since Edo era.
Yokan is one of Japanese traditional sweats that is made from adzuki bean. In this shop you can enjoy the view of typical Japanese garden.
Fortunately because this part has lots of public transportation system such as JR, or Shizuoka Railways that runs along the old Tokaido, to take trains seems reasonable.
