May 20, 2016 - Shinto Waterfall Training
Video of the trip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhNhFGR2MsI
In April my girlfriend and I went to the small town atop Mt Mitake about 75 minutes west of Tokyo to take part in a Shinto Waterfall/Cold Water Training event.
We walked the entire way from Mitake Station on the Ome Line to the top of Mt Mitake. It took several hours and we're glad we did but you can take a bus and then a tram to the top in a lot less time.
The training itself was on a Sunday morning. We met outside of our ryokon Komadori Sanso at 5:45am and began the walk to the waterfall in silence. After warming up and wearing only a fundoshi we took turns standing in the ice cold water 6 separate times.
Afterwards, we changed into dry clothes, walked back and had breakfast. There was a part of me that felt ridiculous for agreeing to this but I'm really glad we did it, without a doubt it was one of the most unique experiences we've had in two years living here.
