Nagasaki: Getting there and around

From/To:

Take the JR Sanyo Shinkansen from Osaka (Shin-Osaka Station) to Fukuoka's Hakata Station (around 2.5 hours). From Hakata, take the "Relay Kamome" limited express train (60 minutes) and Nishikyushu Shinkansen (25 minutes) via Takeo Onsen to Nagasaki. The one way journey costs around 19,000 to 20,000 yen and takes about 4 hours when using a Nozomi or Mizuho train or around 4.5 hours when using a Sakura train along the Sanyo Shinkansen. The Japan Rail Pass is valid on Sakura trains, but a supplement fee has to be paid on Nozomi and Mizuho trains.

Depending on the time of the day, it can be faster to transfer from the Sanyo/Kyushu Shinkansen to the "Relay Kamome" at Shin-Tosu Station instead of Hakata by taking a direct Sakura or Mizuho train between Shin-Osaka and Shin-Tosu. This route is a few hundred yen more expensive than travel with a transfer at Hakata.

Nagasaki Airport is connected with Osaka by JAL and ANA from Itami Airport, Peach Aviation from Kansai Airport, and Skymark from nearby Kobe Airport. Flight time is 70 minutes. The regular one way fare by JAL and ANA is around 30,000 yen, while discount offers are usually available for around 11,500 to 23,000 yen. The one way fares by Peach and Skymark start around 5,000 yen. Nagasaki Airport is located 45 minutes outside of central Nagasaki by bus (1200 yen).

Nagasaki is most easily navigated by tram and on foot. The city center with most major tourist attractions is situated about one kilometer (or five minutes by tram) southeast of Nagasaki Station. Among the major sights, only the Peace Park is not centrally located, several kilometers (or ten minutes by tram) north of Nagasaki Station in the Urakami district.

Trams

Nagasaki is served by four tram lines. Operated by Nagasaki Electric Tramway, the tram lines provide easy access to most of the city's main attractions and run approximately every 5-8 minutes from 6:00 to 23:00.

Enter the tram through the rear door and exit through the front door. Pay the driver when exiting. One ride costs a flat 140 yen per ride regardless of how far you travel. A 1-day pass for unlimited use of trams on one calendar day is available for 600 yen.

The tram network is designed in a way in which it is possible to reach almost any tram stop from any other tram stop without the need of a transfer.

Only at the Shinchi-Chinatown and Shiminkaikan tram stops, it is sometimes necessary to transfer between different lines. To do so without paying extra for the second ride, it is necessary to pay the fare with an IC card (such as Suica, Icoca or Nimoca) within 30 minutes of alighting and boarding. Paper transfer tickets were abolished in April 2021.

Buses

Nagasaki is also served by a network of city buses, operated by Nagasaki Bus. However, the average visitor is unlikely to use buses, except maybe for accessing Mount Inasa.

Nagasaki Airport

Nagasaki Airport is located about 30 kilometers northeast of the city center. The one way journey from the airport to Nagasaki Station by bus takes 45 minutes and costs 1200 yen. There are departures every twenty minutes.
