Miyazaki: Getting there and around

JAL, ANA, Solaseed Air and Jetstar Japan operate numerous flights per day between Tokyo (Jetstar uses Narita Airport while the other airlines use Haneda Airport) and Miyazaki Airport. Flight duration is just under two hours. The regular one way fare by ANA and JAL is around 42,000 yen, however, discount tickets are usually available for between 9,000 and 27,000 yen. The fares by Solaseed Air are typically around 20% lower, while one way fares by Jetstar start around 5000 yen.

Miyazaki Airport is conveniently connected to Miyazaki Station at the center of the city by the Miyazaki Kuko Line (10 minutes, 360 yen, fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass). A shuttle bus also connects the airport to Miyazaki Station (25 minutes, 450 yen, one bus per hour).

Take the JR Tokaido/Sanyo/Kyushu Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kagoshima (Kagoshima-Chuo Station) with one transfer of trains along the way, typically at Shin-Osaka or Hakata Station. From Kagoshima, take the JR Kirishima limited express train to Miyazaki. The entire one way trip takes about 9.5 hours and costs around 32,000 yen. The Japan Rail Pass fully covers the entire trip if using Hikari and Sakura trains, but a supplement fee is required on the faster Nozomi and Mizuho trains.

Take the JR Tokaido/Sanyo/Kyushu Shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin-Yatsushiro Station with one transfer of trains along the way, typically at Shin-Osaka or Hakata Station (6 hours, 28,000 yen). From Shin-Yatsushiro, take the B&S Miyazaki bus to Miyazaki (2 hours, 4500 yen). The entire one way trip takes about 8.5 hours and costs around 32,000 yen. The bus portion is not covered by JR passes.

Miyazaki City is located on the south eastern coast of Kyushu, and can be accessed by rail or air. The city is centered around Miyazaki Station which has convenient train connections to Miyazaki Airport. Most of the city's attractions, such as Miyazaki Shrine, the Prefectural and Science Museums, and the Seagaia Resort are located near the city center and are accessible by public transportation.

The city has an adequate bus network with Miyazaki Station as its hub. There is bus service to all the local attractions, and most are also within reasonable walking distance of a JR train station. Note however, that connections can be infrequent. For those who primarily use buses, a one day bus pass is available on weekends and holidays for 700 yen.

A rental car is not necessary to explore Miyazaki; however, it is convenient especially if traveling to attractions outside the city such as Udo Shrine. Rental outlets are located at the airport and around the city center.
