Tottori: Getting there and around

Kyoto and Tottori are connected by a couple of direct JR Super Hakuto limited express trains per day, while a transfer at Osaka is required at other times. The one way trip takes around three hours, costs about 9000 yen and is not fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass, because the Super Hakuto partially uses non-JR tracks and costs a 2150 yen supplement fee. However, the trip is fully covered by the JR Kansai Wide Pass, JR Sanyo Sanin Area Pass, JR Kansai Sanin Area Pass and JR West All Area Pass. Note that seat reservations are mandatory on the Super Hakuto.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, Nihon Kotsu Bus operated daytime highway buses between Kyoto Station and Tottori Station; however, service is currently suspended. The one way trip used to take about 3.5 hours and cost 4070 yen. A round trip ticket was available for 7330 yen and had to be used within ten days. Buses from nearby Osaka to Tottori are still being operated.

The Tottori Sand Dunes, the city's main attraction, lie outside the city center and are accessible by bus from Tottori Station. Most other of Tottori's attractions are found on the northeast side of Tottori Station in the city center and can be reached in short bus rides or on foot in about half an hour from the station.

Besides a network of regular city buses, there are two loop buses useful for tourists:

The 100 yen Kururi Buses operate everyday of the year along three lines to sightseeing spots around the city center, including the castle ruins and Kannon-in Temple (but not the sand dunes). Buses depart every twenty minutes and cost 100 yen per ride.

The Kirin Jishi Loop Bus operates only on weekends and holidays, connecting Tottori Station with the castle ruins, the sand dunes and Tottori Port in a counter-clockwise loop. The fare is 300 yen per ride or 600 yen for a day pass. There are 1-2 buses per hour.
