Eye condition referral 2024/4/27 16:26
Dear forum,

How can I get a referral to Osaka University or Tokyo University Medical Center?

I have a serious eye condition that is getting steadily worse.
The smaller clinics do not seem to be able to treat it.

I don't have a primary care doctor here as I am only a tourist.

Thanks for any ideas.

It seems that the University of Tokyo does not provide treatment without a referral letter from another hospital. (This is because it is mainly for people with special eye diseases or severe systemic complications.)

Osaka University also needs a referral letter from the hospital.

You can search for hospitals that support English here.
Please see a doctor and get a letter of introduction.

Are you saying that you visited smaller eye doctors and that they couldn't tell you what to do next? If haro1210's advice doesn't work, talk to your embassy.

Osaka and Tokyo are different areas.
I wonder why you choose the two from many.
if you are a visitor, it is better to go home to your country to get a medical treatment. probably it will satisfy you.
I agree with Uco, contact to the embassy and ask their help.

in general, clinics have medical agreements with large hospitals located in each area. they write reference letters to those large hospitals. when patients diseases are serious (and can't treat it by them), the large hospitals may send patients to more larger ones which have specialized sections.
also, you don't have health insurance. you need to show you have enough money to pay in full amounts, if a surgery and hospitalization are necessary. (very simple answer is that you are not welcomed, because it is uncertain you can pay money. because here is your visited place, you can get a first aid for emergency. university hospitals are not the places of first aid. )
