Tsuruoka to Kusatsu Onsen - after suggestion

Hi All,
After many hours of research for my upcoming holiday in Japan, I'm still managing to make small changes to my itinerary.
Below is a small segment of my current plan and I'm after a general suggestion
June 19-21 (3 nights) - Tsuruoka Area or Dewa Sanzen with 2 nights car hire
June 22-23 (2 nights) - Kusatsu Onsen
June 24 (1 night) - Manza Onsen + another 3 weeks of travel
As some may know, there is quite a bit of travel between Tsuruoka and Kusatsu Onsen. I basically leave Tsuruoka around 9:15 AM and get to Kusatsu Onsen around 3:30-4PM.
My small predicament is: do I spend 2 nights at Kusatsu Onsen or stay 1 night in Kusatsu and 1 night somewhere else?
I'd love to hear your advice - along with any specific suggestions on possible towns to stay at.
