You would need to rent a car and it will take longer to drive than you estimate. In the mountains if you can average 50 km/hour you're going fast. If you want to drive the whole thing, I would stop for a couple of nights along the way, and not try to drive it all at once. You also run into more expenses if you want to drop the rental car off at a destination that's not the place you started.

hi Angaguwa, thank you for help. It sounds it is long way to go. Do you think it is worth to do this trip at the beginning of June? How many days do you estimate for the romantic road trip? Because we only have three of four days in Nikko? What would you suggest us to start the trip and end of the trip? where should we stop over night?
Or we forget this romantic road trip, just take it is easy to wander at Nikko.

Depending on your arrival and time in Nikko, you can easily see the Toshogu Shrine and lower Nikko area in a day. If you rent a car for 2 days, you could take it easy driving to Oigami Onsen to spend the night.

Tocoo Car Rental:

(Lately I've been bumped up to the Y5200/day car and can't get the Y4200/day rental car)

Oigami Onsen:

There are a lot of stops at waterfalls and views along the way that can take away from driving time (Lake Kegon Falls overlook at Akechidaira, Lake Chuzenji, Ryuzu Falls just to start). The next day, you could drive a bit farther west before turning around to return the rental car and stay in Nikko again or catch the next train onward.

I think it would take 2 days driving in each direction for the whole road if you didn't stop too much along the way, longer if you took your time.
