Kyoto only has 2 subway lines and a couple of private rail lines. An all day bus pass in Kyoto costs 500 yen and the pass gets you most everywhere. It costs 690 yen to take the Nara line train from Kyoto station to Nara station, and 540 yen from Kyoto to Osaka riding the JR Special Rapid Service...getting your money's worth out of a kansai through pass depends on how much traveling you plan on doing while in the kansai area.

As mentioned by the other poster, a Kansai Thru Pass won't pay off if you just travel around Osaka and Kyoto. You will have to do some major trips within the Kansai Region in order for the pass to pay off, e.g. Himeji or Koyasan.
