Karate

In karate, one strikes with their fists, elbows and feet in defensive action. Karate is related to Chinese Kung-fu and the Korean Taekwondo. Karate-do means "the way of the empty hand" since karate does not usually employ weapons.

Two basic kinds of traditional karate performances are:

  • Kata:
One fighter or a group performs their skills in front of judges. Precision, technique, and posture are the criteria.

  • Kumite:
A sparring match between two karate fighters in which they do not really hit each other but stop their movements right before the opponent's body. Kumite matches can end after a fixed time period, or after the successful perfomance of an especially damaging technique.
