Timetable Examples

basic information

This page lists some example timetables to give you an idea of how far you can get in one day from Tokyo, traveling to the Tohoku Region with a Seishun 18 Kippu. Please note that there are many other possible itineraries besides our examples.

However, when traveling by local trains in the Tohoku Region, keep in mind that local service tends to be rather infrequent and connections inconvenient. Therefore, it is highly recommended to prepare an itinerary ahead of time by studying the timetables.

The example timetables below show only the stations where a transfer is necessary and some of the major stations along the way. Note that the timetables apply to weekdays, and that some departure times are slightly different on weekends and holidays. The data is subject to change. Double-check before starting your trip!

Hokkaido & East Japan Pass

Please note that there is also a kind of regional version of the Seishun 18 Kippu, called the Hokkaido & Higashinihon Pass. It is valid on local trains in the service areas of JR East and JR Hokkaido, which include the Kanto (Tokyo and surroundings), Tohoku and Hokkiado regions.

The following are the other differences to the Seishun 18 Kippu:

  • It costs only 9,500 Yen instead of 11,500 Yen.
  • Unlike the Seishun 18 Kippu, it must be used on five consecutive days and cannot be shared.
  • Unlike the Seishun 18 Kippu, it is valid on the non-JR trains between Morioka and Hachinohe and on non-reserved seats on the JR "Hamanasu" night train between Aomori and Sapporo, making it possible to travel from Tokyo to Sapporo in 24 hours! Click here for more details.
  • Unlike the Seishun 18 Kippu, it can be used as a youth hostel member card.
  • It is available during the same three seasons of the year as the Seishun 18 Kippu, but the exact dates are slightly different.

Example 1: Leaving early in direction of Morioka

By taking one of the first trains in the morning on the Utsunomiya Line, leaving Tokyo's Ueno Station at 6:09, you will be able to reach Morioka by late afternoon.

Ueno (Tokyo) 06:09
Utsunomiya 07:52 08:02
Kuroiso   08:56 09:39
Koriyama     10:40 11:06
Fukushima       11:53 12:00
Shiroishi         12:33 12:36
Sendai           13:23 13:40
Ichinoseki             15:22 15:27
Hiraizumi               15:35
Morioka               16:56

Unfortunatelly it is not possible to continue all the way to Aomori within the day by just using the Seishun 18 Kippu. However, if you do not mind paying an additional 630 Yen, you can hop on an Odate bound train on the Hanawa Line to reach Aomori by 11pm. (The 630 Yen need to be paid, because the train runs on non-JR owned tracks between Morioka and Koma.)

Morioka 17:46
Odate 20:45 21:06
Hirosaki   21:51 21:55
Aomori     22:39
The red color indicates that an additional 630 Yen has to be paid on that section.

Alternatively, from Morioka you could also continue on the Tazawako Line to Kakunodate and as far as Akita within the day.

Example 2: Taking a train around 8am in direction of Morioka

If you take the train on the Utsunomiya Line, leaving Ueno Station at 8:06, you will be able to reach Morioka by eight o'clock in the evening.

Ueno (Tokyo) 08:06
Utsunomiya 09:51 09:54
Kuroiso   10:47 11:20
Koriyama     12:37 12:42
Fukushima       13:28 14:00
Sendai         15:34 16:02
Kogota           16:46 16:50
Ichinoseki             17:37 18:07
Hiraizumi               18:15
Morioka               19:41

Example 3: Taking a day train along the Sea of Japan coast

If you leave Tokyo with the first train on the Takasaki Line, leaving Ueno Station at 5:13, you can reach Akita by nine o'clock in the evening.

Ueno (Tokyo) 05:13
Takasaki 06:55 07:08
Minakami   08:11 08:19
Nagaoka     10:14 10:38
Niigata       11:55 13:27
Murakami         14:48 16:03
Sakata           18:29 18:56
Akita             20:42

Example 4: To Akita via Yamagata

If you leave Tokyo around 7am, you can reach Akita by eight o'clock in the evening by following the Tohoku Line from Tokyo to Fukushima and then the Ou Line via Yamagata to Akita.

Ueno (Tokyo) 07:00
Utsunomiya 08:42 08:45
Kuroiso   09:35 10:33
Koriyama     11:37 11:55
Fukushima       12:43 12:54
Yonezawa         13:40 13:47
Yamagata           14:33 14:45
Shinjo             16:02 16:19
Akita               19:25
