Shimoda Park is an attractive wooded park on a hill next to Shimoda's city center.
Fortifications for the defense of the city once stood on the hill, but only ruins remain. Today, Shimoda Park is the site of the Monument to the Opening of US-Japan Diplomatic Relations built in 1957, and more than one thousand ajisai (hydrangea), which bloom in June.
From the opposite side of the park, you can get a preview of the wildly rugged coastline, expecting you further down the southern coast of the Izu Peninsula around Irozaki.

How to get there

Shimoda Park can be reached in a 7 minute bus ride (190 yen) from Shimoda's railway station on a bus bound for the Shimoda Aquarium. The park is just next to the aquarium.
