What to do if car accident? 2015/8/8 06:11
Good day.
I will be renting a car from Toyota in a few months. I drive very careful and safe here at home but of course none are perfect. I keep wondering how to act in case of a car accident in Japan, even a minor one like accidentally bumping a car when parking...

The Toyota information says to contact them and the police, but if I do not speak Japanese very well, is there an English speaking police officer or staff I could contact?

If in an accident the other part is the one who is at fault, and this guy would flee, what would I do? :)

Generally no. If possible it might be best if the other person involved calls the police. They might be able to send over an interpreter, but its not guaranteed. Toyota might also be able to help with the process as well.

In the unlikely scenario that the other party flees, you should call the police and then call toyota.

I am aware that the police can take anyone into custody for up to 30 days or so, I am a bit afraid it might occur to me if in an accident, especially if I dont speak Japanese so well.

The police could detain you if they suspect you of committing a crime, but it isn't against the law to get in an accident, and even less so to be the victim of a hit and run. Plus Japanese police generally seem reluctant to detain people for minor infractions, so I don't think your worries are really justified.

In Japan traffic rules are all same anywhere READ this PDF guide all.
http://www.hkd.mlit.go.jp/topics/toukei/chousa/h20keikaku/e/e_all.pdf
Also this (not all basic rules only).
http://www.toyotarentacar.net/english/guide/reason/trafficsign/

Police : call "110" (any small accident even broke something hitted by car, stolen or other big trouble)
http://www.pref.shizuoka.jp/police/english/duty/110.html
Fire dep: call "119" (need ambulance, fire fighting and rescue)
http://japaninfoswap.com/calling-119-for-emergency-assistance-in-japan...
In Japan no need "ambulance fee" no worry.

Recent years foregin drivers a lot both department operators can speak ENG well no problem.
But local police officers are not so good sometimes so call Toyota operator for helping/supports.
So If some one serious damaged call 119 first then 110 quicky finally Toyota.

(extra)
Only Nippon Rent-A-Car have "Accident Reception Center"with free dial(call) as major car rent company.

The only advice I've seen is to say sorry a lot and that the paper-work will bury them (police) for many hours - if it's minor (no real damage) people might not want to bother you. (warning, this isn't official advice, just what I've heard :) sorry ).

Oh I can say sorry alright :) People often tells me to stop saying sorry for minor things, haha...

But calling 119 and / or 110, I would expect a Japanese person to answer. Should I go with "Eigo kudasai" or "Taihen desu yo, kuruma wa (accident) ga arimasu, ima (place) ni imasu. Namae wa..." or something like that?

Speaking about details or how many injured would be way beyond my skills... like "san-nin no karada wa warui desu...." sounds a bit broken, like "the bodies of three people are bad"...

Maybe there is an accident folder or something to get?

In my home country we always say
- What happened
- Where it happened
- How many victims (if applicable)
- My name and phone number

Etc...
