Do i need to apply or provide any special paperwork to enter Japan for a holiday other than clearing customs/immigration and getting passport sighted & stamped?

That depends on which country you are from. Some countries may require visas. Have a look online to find out if your country requires a visa.

Not if you are Australian. In that case you can just arrive in Japan and can enter on a visa waiver.

Note that prior paperwork may be required if you are bringing medication (depending on the nature and quantity).
